Because it becomes an issue with disrupting the rest of the class.

i wonder when this shift in power took place....i went to grade school in the 80's and I'd shit my pants if i had to go to the principal's office or they called my parents about something

My mom was a 2nd grade teacher in a private school and retired in the early '00s and she'd always be telling me about how if she contacted a parent about a problem regarding anything, that they'd take the childs side and nothing ever got resolved and it was just a big hassle. I guess what i'm saying is my parents would actually hear the teachers concern, whereas nowadays it seems like the child is perfect and can do no wrong, regardless of the circumstance. And yea i'm sure the kids realize this and take advantage of it

I graduated in 01 so I was in school throughout the 90s. I got one F in science on a single report card in 5th grade because I didn't do a project. My mom was so furious I was grounded for 9 weeks, until we got the next report card. No TV, no video games, no playing with my friends... Fucking brutal.

Fair enough. I grew up in the 90s so I feel your pain about all your shit going into a box and then staring at a wall or god forbid reading until your sentence was up

You can't fail kids until high school as they will clog up the system. I mean you can give them straight Fs but they will go on to the next grade. This is the biggest reason so many kids struggle as Freshman. They have been threatened with failing their whole life but it never happened. Then come Sophomore year they are sitting in the same Algebra class again and it hits them their high school teacher wasn't lying. In high school a lot of struggling students eventually just drop out after a while so the system does not get too backed up.

This isn't a "IN MY DAY!!!!" type of thing. The kids aren't the problem. Kids are assholes, always have been and always will be. This is the adults fault. Don't blame kids for adults not having the balls to do the right thing.

I moved just over the border earlier in the year for a job and the amount of people in Southern Wisconsin who fled Illinois in the last couple of years is kind of frightening.

And being that my mother was a teacher, she continually relays the fact that everyone she knows from those days is trying like hell to get out of the CPS system. The people steering that ship are absolutist radicals who do not represent teachers well.

Great days for Illinois.

I will start off by saying that I don't have kids. And I'm generally not a fan of public sector unions (private sector, sure go for it).

That being said, I think the entire situation is fucked, and the teachers are going to both a) eventually lose their pensions and b) keep on having to do more and more shit that is not actually teaching. So I am leaning towards supporting the strike.

I have argued with one of my teacher friends that the bubble in public teaching is going to burst. I realize that the community of the classroom and being face to face with a teacher are good things. But there are so many bad things going on (as highlighted in the past six pages) that I think more and more families, especially middle class families who are going to not want to pay property taxes towards shitty schools which don't work, are going to say fuck this, I'll figure out some other way to get my kid educated. And I think the technology of 15 years from now is going to change everything.

Good teachers, and I will submit that anybody on here who is a teacher is probably a fucking outstanding teacher, are going to eventually be able to say "fuck this" as well, and figure out how to make more money doing what they love without all the social justice crap from being tied to a public sector institution. I don't know if this moves towards for-profit education, or just more free agency among the best teachers.

There are a few districts in south suburbs who have gotten the teacher unions with majority older teachers to give up their salary schedules and go with a flat yearly increase. What this means is new teachers to their districts will never come close to what current teachers make in the same time frame.

The Baby Boomers enjoyed the sweet spot in American labor history (for college grads, at least).

Technology is already there...it's just a matter of being allowed to use it. And I don't think there's any doubt it will be superior to traditional methods. Kids can repeat lessons as often as necessary and everyone can progress at their own pace. I'm sure the union will fight it tooth and nail.

How many "dumb kids" can we pass through the school system before it catches up with society?
