Of course I'll be upset if they don't win the WS. I said that in my original post. It just wont be a soul crushing defeat like 2003. Based on the list below, I would rank this under last season.

2003--The granddaddy of losses. Nothing will ever compare to this one.
2015--wasn't expecting them to get there and so got way over my skis and bought in 100%. Sucked to see them go out with a whimper
2007--similar to 2015, the D'backs of all teams...
2008--The series ended before it began, hard to get worked up about this one
1998--Just a bright eyed kid with no real expectations. I was just happy to be there.

All of this is a moot point though... They are going to crush all opposition.

Must not have been around for 1984...up 2-0 and getting swept in San Diego...I'll always hope there's a special place in Hell reserved for Steve Garvey.

This may be the best chance they have in the next several years. Some players are in obvious decline, and others have reached their ceilings. Other teams will rebound after copying the Cubs' tanking strategy. And they will be hesitant or unable to sign big-ticket free agents after the Heyward debacle. :D

If you don't plan to literally kill yourself if they lose, you're not much of a Cub fan.

Clearly. I wonder why the Sox fans aren't demanding a championship? They should be leading the revolt to fire the front office. I guess they aren't fans.

They've had their best season in what, over 100 years? Fuckin' right it's a heartbreak if they lose to the Mets or Giants. It was heartbreaking when the ragtag 2003 Cubs lost the NLCS to an objectively superior Marlins team and I'm supposed to shrug off an NLDS loss? This is nuts.

Probably. When you're between 10-25 years old that's the sports fan sweet spot. Sports are so much fun. That 2003 Cubs team was a missile to the dick. The '07+'08 Cubs were a reminder to expect failure. I no longer have expectations.

Yep...I will try my damndest to not get out over my skis ever again with this team...If they win it...I'll be ecstatic and shed many tears. If they lose, meh.

That seems like a difficult trick to pull off. It seems that how mad you'll be if they lose and happy if they win would have a directly proportional relationship.

To me 2004 was just as bad as 2003. I lived and died with every pitch the entire season and then watched them get healthy and wet the bed.

So once the Cubs win the WS this year, I wont have to demand a championship in the future?

I don't follow baseball the way I used to (truth be told, I never fully recovered from 2008. The engineered sucking of 2012-2014 hurt, too, and the non-engineered sucking of 2009-2011 was just as bad), so if the Cubs win the World Series, I don't think I'll have it in me to demand another championship for quite a while. Not 100+ years, but I'd be good for four or five, I'm sure.

I respect Hank's outlook, and I am of the mind when you become emotionally invested in sports to the point it seriously affects your mood for more than a few hours after a series/playoff ending loss you should probably reevaluate your priorities.

That being said, if the Cubs don't win at least one World Series in this 5 or 6 or however many year window they have I will be disappointed. Will I take my disappointment into a work week, or be an asshole to my wife, or get drunk and look for a fight because the Cubs fucked up? No. I'll have bills and by that point kids to worry about.

If/when they win, I'll celebrate for sure. I'll get up and cheer. Walk around my house clapping. Hell, I may even post about my enjoyment on social media like every other tool will be.

Every Cubs fan wants a championship. Maybe we just know how to temper our emotions better after 108 years.

I could def see myself shedding some tears. My last remaining grandparent is a 93 year old die hard Cubs fan. It would make me so happy to be able to know she saw the Cubs finally win.
