Well it's true, isn't it?

Sure you can enjoy a prolonged stretch of playoff appearances with no World Series and still be happy, but wouldn't there be some part of you that resented the team for constantly falling short?

Idk about resentment. Maybe... I kind of place resentment after disappointment.

If Theo begins to make a string of bad judgement signings, or starts trading the farm system down to nothing (A la Kenny Williams. And that's no disrespect to Sox fans. Williams and Reinsdorf plunged the White Sox into prolonged mediocrity. I wasn't a fan of that. Being a Chicago baseball fan is that much better when both teams are in the playoffs) then I'll definitely develop resentment. I just don't foresee it right now.

I wouldn't say it's all that matters. I enjoyed some of the recent Bulls teams, but I was still pretty upset every time they lost. I just don't get how a person can be elated if their team wins and shrug it off if they lose. How happy can you be if you essentially have zero investment emotionally?

But mostly I'm just trolling because I'm bored as fuck at work today.

Which is why I wanted to get this in now, before anything begins. I don’t know what’s going to happen with the Cubs in the second season. In the first one — the long one, the real one — the Cubs were far better than anybody. Maybe it’s not quite mission accomplished, but, it really kind of is.

We'll call it the "Prime Minister" (shoutout to Pete Nice) or the "Chancellor's" trophy. If it's good enough for the NHL and MLS then it's good enough for MLB.

This is just the start of a long run for the Cubs. Last year JORR was saying the Cubs should make trades at the deadline for players who might put them over the top. They did not make such moves, as Theo (and I) knew it was a year early. After adding some free agents and then trading for an elite closer, they are a true contender and along with Boston, a favorite to reach the World Series. This, despite losing one of their great hitters, Kyle Schwarber in the 3rd game of the season. The future is very bright and guys like Russell and Bryant made significant strides this year and are still not yet in their prime years. They will be even better. They may or may not win in 2016, but we know they have a legitimately good chance this year and should be legitimate contenders for many years to come. JORR and all the other peanut butter and jealous Sox fans might as well get used to the Cubs being exceptionally good.

What kind of dipshit looks at a team that won 103 games and finished first in the major leagues and says "the future is bright"? The present is bright! So bright you shouldn't be able to see past it!

That was the worst of it all because they were built to win that year only and only by fluke. Still cringe when I think about it. Detroit wanted nothing to do with the Cubs. Fuck the Padres and fucking Garvey. And also the druggies Eric Show and Alan Wiggins also.

Detroit would've won that series.

Yeah I don't think the Tigers were going to be stopped that year. Lance Parrish and his spray painted catcher's mitt were not going to be denied in 84.

Uh, yeah. Even as a youth I took solace in the 'fact' that Detroit would've steamrolled to victory all the same.

Based on the same logic the 94 Sox would have beat the Expos.

Yep.

2 World Series championships in an 11 year span.

Not bad.

That's the eternal question I guess. In baseball I suppose I'd rather be the 91-05 Braves (even if they hadn't won the one) than a fluky one-hit wonder of the White Sox / Carolina Hurricanes variety. Playoff baseball is just so much better than the regular season even in losing. That's where the memories are made.

This is a moving narrative though. When Cub fans want to denigrate the Sox they try to act as if the franchises are historically equivalent. The 1951-67 White Sox are the 1991-2005 Braves.

Whenever I argue with a Sox fan, in the back of my.mind, I'm always thinking "please don't bring up the 1950's."

Must be nice to always have that trump card.

Well, it's hard to go back beyond the start of divisional play b/c there really wasn't playoff baseball. That said, it looks like they only finished above 3rd in the AL a few times. Either way, the Cubs will probably lose this year, then next year they'll play like shit, get killed by injuries, sneak into the Wild Card with 87 wins and win the WS. That's today's game.

The only card Sox fans have is 2005. And frankly, Cubs fans have negative cards for the sick, soulless collapses of 1984 and 2003. It's too bad about '84, because that was actually a likable team.
