Confidence is one thing, but being noted for interrupting repeatedly is another. Hillary didn't interrupt much so as to allow Trump to hang himself; I can't understand why the same strategy is not being used here. Maybe it's because like you said - Pence is much slicker in dancing around the question than Trump. Hell, Pence would be a better nominee than Trump on typical politician slickness alone.

I would have gone a different direction. I would have buttered up Pence and painted him as a good guy who simply can't answer for the evil of Donald Trump. Every single statement would be prefaced by the statement "I know you have an impossible job here, Governor Pence..."
