I don't know how it works in baseball but tanking to me sounds like a really bad team says they are wiping a slate clean. Blow it all up start over. While you are right it may not work, I think it would be better than floundering in what ever you are doing or continuing to suck. Even when you are tanking a season are you building at the same time? I guess if the Bears said we are going to suck for 4 seasons but here is what we are trying, I'd be on board. If it doesn't work you aren't really worse off. If it does work you have a chance to win and be competitive for a bit.

Why?

To me the goal is to win a championship.

You're saying if the Cubs were not to win a World Series during Theo/Jed's regime, you wouldn't consider it a failure?

I would trade 10 playoff appearances for 1 title.

Leash not only setting himself up for this year's impending failure, but also MANY future failures.

Maybe he is crazy. Or maybe he is a REALLY. SMART. CUBS FAN.

I know you answered it in another thread.

It's cool if you think otherwise.

If they won 100 games a year and made the playoffs ten straight years? I think I'd be able to cope, especially given the Cubs history... but even without the Cubs history, any team in the majors would take that.

But the reality is that you can't. It's hypothetical nonsense. 10 playoff appearances more than likely gets you a title. That's the point.

Any team in the majors would take that. It would mean a lot of commercial success for them and their fans.

It would still be a failure if they went those 10 years and did not win a single title. The Braves went 1-14. The Cubs could go 0-10. So far, they are 0-4

There are people in this thread who said Theyd rather have that over a fluke title.

There is one goal. Win a title. That trumps all. Having more shots at it is good but it's not a consolation prize.

Of course I'd rather have one title (especially as a Cubs fan) than any number of playoff appearances. But you are not addressing what the best way to win a title is. In my eyes, it is to make multiple playoff appearances. Some Sock fans (maybe not you, but at least some) are confusing the means with the ends. The ultimate goal is to win a championship. I happen to believe that the best way to accomplish that is to make the playoffs as many times as possible.

I don't know that most fans look at a decade or era of games in hindsight. Sure you'll be disappointed they didn't win a world series year to year but chances are you enjoyed the hell out of those seasons. You'll still continue to hope they win one but it's not the crap you've been watching before that.

So if the Hawks had 0 titles you would look back and say you enjoyed the hell out of the seasons?

That is not how it seems when they've lost in other seasons.

I used to look back on the early 80s and early 90s Hawks teams with frustration....that was torture, at the time. I understood clearly that some of the all-time great teams were standing in the way, but still. When I do happen to see a game with Bob Murray, I no longer curse my fate. Winning more than one title made my past better.

It'd have been a bummer for sure. If they'd have only gotten 1 it'd be fine. The seventeen seconds one was the best. I think I've said before if they won it this year it somehow would have been a disappointment. It would have been empty, they would not have deserved it, imo.

Except it doesn't really work that way. The Astros didn't make the postseason this year. The Cubs might not next year. Not to mention that the integrity of the game is compromised when teams begin the season without winning as a goal.

It's a rebuilding or reorganizing more than tanking. If they win great but you don't expect it. You can't, the team is shit. How do you say let's go win it all when you suck ass. It's not realistic. It's not tanking when you suck, you just suck.

Your last sentence is your own creation. Just because a team doesn't spend their ass off doesn't mean they're purposely losing. Besides, their Southside counterparts, who were "trying", didn't have anymore success.

That's not the way baseball works. Teams have often gone from last or near last to first (and vice versa).

Come on JORR. The Cub were so far behind the times organizationally speaking that a full on tear down was necessary. There was no foundation whatsoever to even contemplating saving. Not to mention the aging veterans and bloated contracts which were going to hamstring you even if you wanted to go for it.

What would you have done if they would've put you in charge of the club?

I wouldn't have had short big league payrolls for three years. That's not fair to fans who are paying for one of the priciest tickets in the game.

Interesting. Ignoring the fact that I'm sure no one "lost on purpose," I am definitely intrigued at how philosophically opposed you are to your Sox fan cohorts.

I have been told all week that the ends justify the means, no matter what. Almost all Sock fans have said that a World Series victory is all that matters, and anything less is a failure, regardless of the means.

Now you're saying that the means are most definitely a huge factor and that "rebuilding" is a dirty word, regardless of where it leads.

I think you all need to get together and come to an agreement.

Back then, the two big ticket items some were clamoring for were Pujols and Fielder. Wouldn't you agree that it would have been disastrous to have inked either one? What's the sense in loading up on free agents if you know in your heart of hearts that it's not going to get you over the top?

Interesting. Ignoring the fact that I'm sure no one "lost on purpose," I am definitely intrigued at how philosophically opposed you are to your Sox fan cohorts.

I have been told all week that the ends justify the means, no matter what. Almost all Sock fans have said that a World Series victory is all that matters, and anything less is a failure, regardless of the means.

Now you're saying that the means are most definitely a huge factor and that "rebuilding" is a dirty word, regardless of where it leads.

I think you all need to get together and come to an agreement.

I speak for myself, not any other "Sock" fans. I've never made the dumb statement that, "all that matters is a championship."

You can rebuild without tanking. No other big market team ever gave away three seasons like the Cubs did. It worked. Congratulations. But it was bsd for baseball. Now you have about a quarter of the teams not making an effort.

Theo. told. you. what. he. was. doing.

That's not the way baseball works. Teams have often gone from last or near last to first (and vice versa).

It doesn't seem like it but I'm an outsider. There are more options in baseball but I feel like the the NFL is more of a crapshoot. If you are a bad baseball team you will get beat during the season and definitely in the playoffs.

Hey, don't get mad at me. We're in agreement, brohan.

There were clearly shots fired at dolphin, Frank, Rick, peeps, favrefan, and keyser here, but no skin off my back. I'm in your corner, and I appreciate your objectivity.
