I think you're putting too much emphasis on one word, strong, and trying really hard to make the case he said the opposite much be true and ptsd soldiers are weak. Strong is just one of those vague bullshit simpleton adjectives like smart and good and huge that Trump overuses because he's an idiot.

anecdotally, the many comments I've seen from soldiers and military pages on fb don't have a problem with what he said.

from my limited experience with vets and the VA, couple of trends over the last generation maybe account for some of the increase in vets choosing the easy way out:

1) improved medical-care for troops in the field as well as faster medevac/dustoff procedures--guys and girls wounded in action in Iraq would be quickly transported by air to hospitals in germany and receive treatment in the field/in the air and in the hospital that wasn't available previously. our KIA's have gone down, but in the process a lot of soldiers are surviving, returning and living with permanent disabilities/chronic pain/injuries that...

2) VA doctors acting as pill-pushers who preach "managing pain" rather than physicians / surgeons seeking to cure chronic pain via corrective surgeries, extended physical rehab etc.

No. It means that the soldiers made a sacrifice MANY of us will never understand.

Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. Any man or woman who risk their lives to fight for their country are strong. It's really that simple. Some make the ultimate sacrifice of their body in action and others make the mental sacrifice for the rest of their lives. No one should call them weak.

Can't tell if NAS thinks everyone who enlists is some rah-rah Pat Tillman pat riot or if he thinks that the simple act of enlisting and serving is somehow worthy of adulation.

Cuz for every Pat Tillman in any platoon, there were a couple dozen Hussras--who bought into the recruiter's BS b/c an older friend was enlisting and it seemed better than another summer baling fucking hay and picking damn rocks; or who joined for college money; or because it was the army or jail; or the old dude (he was all of 32, which was old to my 17) who was recently divorced and trying to start over; or they were from a background that the Army felt like a step forward; or most anything but wanting to get shot at and possibly killed dead. or, worse, lose a limb/try to live with chronic pain.

The Pat Tillman types, typically legacy military brats, were roundly mocked for their exuberant militarism. Also, they tended to run to the drill sergeants and narc any time they caught someone breaking the rules.

We had this one drill instructor at Ft Jackson, a future officer from West Point--"drill cadet". Dude looked just like Candyman. The NCO drill instructors/sergeants regarded drill cadet only slightly above the new recruits--whom they regarded and talked to the way you might look at and speak to dog-shit on the bottom of your shoe. The NCO drill sgts were all airborne qualified and special forces trained. Apparently being a drill instructor is considered an important job in the military.

Drill Cadet was always trying to win the respect of the NCO drill instructors. He'd try to mimic their manner of dealing with us. One morning, after PT and chow (which was really fucking good, fwiw, better than my college cafeteria's slop), the NCO drill instructors were off honing their insults and waxing their staches (one dude had a classic state trooper stache, rare in the Army) or whatever and so drill cadet had us to himself.

He immediately goes for one of the weakest or most vulnerable recruits in the platoon. This Filipino kid whose name I can't recall but call him Q-bert.

Q-bert's primary language was likely tagalog, but def not English. And so he'd often turn the wrong way while marching. Q-Bert, on cue, turned the wrong way in response to Candyman's command to have us turn and face him (as he was calling cadence) and settle into parade rest. So Candyman saunters up to Q-Bert, stands in front of him, towering over him. Q-Bert's basically staring at the lowest point of Candyman's gig-line and asks the kid with limited English comprehension skills:

"What's your problem, Private Q-bert, you have stupid juice for breakfast this morning?"

Q-Bert, completely sincere and innocent and in his small flip voice:

"I didn't have any juice for breakfast this morning, Drill Cadet"

Trump being exposed as a fraud.
