When there's a single important game on the scoreboard it really shows "run support" for the specious concept it is. "Run support" only exists within a world of averages and algorithms along with its spurious sisters such as "expected runs". What you had last night was a real baseball game. There was one homer in said game, which some might refer to as "support", but which I simply call a run. The reason such "support" was enjoyed by Jon Lester was because that homer was allowed by Johnny Cueto. And the reason Cueto lacked "support" was simply because Lester pitched better than he did.

How many 1 run games have we seen in the playoffs so far?

A third of them. At the time you posted this it was 37.5%.

That was the only 1-0 game I saw and the only pitchers duel outside of Giants at Mets game.

There are other one run games besides 1-0 ones. Every game is a pitcher's duel. Some of them are just lopsided.

In every other game the winning team has scored a least 3 runs. Even when you include that 1-0 game the winning playoff teams are averaging 5 runs a game.

A lot of weak pitching.

No thanks. Purdue vs Illinois had many great moments too and it was two bad teams duking it out.

If baseball was so great the White Sox would have been worth watching.

But you're not treating it like a chicken egg question. You said Lester pitched a better game.

Cueto pitched better. They both pitched pretty great.

The guy that gave up the run that lost the game pitched better than the guy who pitched a shutout?

I would too. Cueto was definitely more dominant but Baez made the most of his opportunity.

In many contexts the masses are asses and sports consumption is no exception.

As it is, his bizarre redefinition of popularity makes him sound like the poptimist idiots who militantly insist that Taylor Swift is more popular and better than your favorite musician or an art critic extolling the brilliance of Thomas Kinkade.

The only argument for the "popularity" of football is TV ratings. Could you acknowledge that?

And total revenue, which I'd say is probably a decent metric for popularity as well.

I look at it this way.

Baseball appeals to the poet and gentle soul in me. When I sit down to watch a game I expect to lay back relax and have occasional bursts of excitement that may cause me to be on the edge of my seat.

Football appeals to the barbarian in me, the adrenaline junkie. When I turn on a game I expect to be constantly on edge with thrills constantly.

I just love watching playoff games in Toronto. With the exception of the beer throwing idiot, they seem like the most fun, engaged crowd that isn't largely Hispanic.

Baseball is so one of the Cubs fans in that thread played video games for some of the most important innings and went and deleted posts by a respected board member!
