The parallels to both 1984 and 2003 would be too much to endure. And losing three straight to lose a playoff series, which the Cubs have done in every playoff since 1945, would be horrific.

Stop it.

Although I do have to acknowledge the irony that a guy named "Panik" got the game-winning hit last night.

Speaking of Panik, is it true that he and Zobrist are the only two players in all of baseball who had more walks than strikeouts this year? I saw a blurb to that effect but maybe it meant the only two on these two teams. If it's all of baseball, how times have changed...

Must win tonight, no excuses. You can't burn Lester in a game 5, and I don't think a lot of these guys can handle a game 5. Maddon needs to be smarter, and someone needs to get hits. Rizzo, Heyward, Russell, the catchers, Fowler, and Zobrist, step the fuck up. The whole reason Heyward and Zobrist were brought in were for the playoffs, show us why. Zobrist has been ok at best, but nothing special.

Jesus Christ...they're going to lose a game or two during the playoffs.

A little life out of Rizzo and Russell would be nice.

If Bumgarner had gone the distance and won 5-1 in a boring game, we probably don't feel as anxious. This feels more ominous.

Since so MANY CFMB members know how to run a game better than Joe Maddon, can we finally agree that managers don't really matter?

No one said this. Maddon made a mistake last night.

Maddon has been fantastic over the two years he has been here, and for a decade in Tampa.

In fact...the Cubs losing last night because of Maddon's moves is the exact reason why managers matter.

I think we saw last night that they do. There was no reason to make those moves in the 8th. Overall his moves have been great.

In one instance, possibly yes.

Over the course of a season, I'll take my chances with Maddon. You would too.

It's always easier to manage from a message board.

But if a guy can be so wrong that MANY message board baseball savants see it, how great a manager could the guy in question really be?

AN NL MANAGER'S JOB:

Fill out the lineup card
Pinch hit for the pitcher after the sixth inning in a close game (occasionally double switch so dummies think you're really smart)
Get complained about by fans
Eventually get fired

Just think how Buck Showalter feels. 3-time manager of the year and makes one of the dumbest (non)moves of all time.

Depends on the catcher. But ultimately, the pitcher has to call the game. It's his ass and money on the line when he gets shelled.

Don't be silly. We see mistakes coaches and managers make MANY times from the comfort of our beds or couches. We see mistakes presidents make. None of us believe we can be better than them.

Yes. And this is why managers are important and Maddon is one of the best. He won't make those mistakes as often as the next guy.

It's ridiculous and you wouldn't stand for it in any situation except the two you describe. Can you imagine telling standing over Darkside and telling him how to install your HVA/phone system combo?

I don't know about that. I'd say you just won't notice them as much because he has better hitters and pitchers than the next guy. If they win that game, none of you are talking about his bullpen usage. At least not negatively. You're probably saying that he knew exactly when to ride Montgomery and for exactly how long.

You're right. When it comes to sports MANY of us have watched our entire lives and probably played too so we have some knowledge. Politics is entirely different though.

Uh, yeah, maybe if he was installing my HVA/phone system combo in the ice maker of my freezer, maybe I'd make the comment that he's making a mistake.

Sometimes you don't have to be an expert to recognize a mistake.

MANY criticized his usage during the game. Not simply after they went wrong

no, that's a dumb idea. A pitcher can be mentally hung up on certain pitches. Pitchers need help, more so than catchers.
