I noticed that too....maybe like the Yanks the NY Giants had only numbers on the back?

that was the tradition, starting in the 60s. no names on home jerseys since your fans know you. cubs didn't have them until the 90s, i think.

The names on the back are another Bill Veeck invention. Nobody had them until the White Sox in 1960. Some of the old time teams (Yankees, Red Sox, Giants) kept the classic look without the names.

I think the Giants had names on their jerseys at home up through the '90s but took them off when they moved into their new old-timey park. It's an affectation, like how their home uniforms aren't white but off-white.

If memory serves, the Cubs went nameless on their jerseys the year after Sosa left (perhaps Hendry was trying to send a "team first" message) but that didn't last too long --the marketing department probably had a fit as I imagine jerseys without names are a tough sell.

Yeah, no names at home in 2005 and 2006. When McDonough took over for 2007, he put the names back on and got rid of the blue jersey, too. After he left, the names stayed, but the blue jersey came back.

Ugh, sure am glad I remember details from the mid-2000s Cubs.

If no one is on base, just have a second pitcher catching. Who cares how many balls get by and peg the ump.

I really enjoyed this for what it's worth.

Go Cubs.

According to Drinky, Heyward is back in the lineup against the lefty.

I hope the Cubs come out with a better effort tonight than they did last night. There were some great moments, but they needed to finish the Giants off and they just kept letting them hang around.

Tonight is Lackey time. He talked a good game about coming to the Cubs for a ring, well he needs to get the job done. The Cubs offense left too many runners on base. They need to plate some early runs and just pour it on. Don't let the Giants be close at the end of this game and take the series back to Chicago.

This is the reason Lackey signed on with Chicago.....to pitch in meaningful games in October and the reason the Cubs signed him.....he's been good in them. Should be another great game.

I haven't been that impressed with Lackey this season.

He basically just throws fastballs down the middle and hopes for the best too much for my liking.

Nothing wrong with a well located fastball with good sinking action. He's generally on the corners, which is why he gets on umpires so much, if they are not giving him the corners. I wanted this guy signed and believe he will give them a good chance to clinch tonight.

Depends on the catcher. But ultimately, the pitcher has to call the game. It's his ass and money on the line when he gets shelled.

no, that's a dumb idea. A pitcher can be mentally hung up on certain pitches. Pitchers need help, more so than catchers.

I'm not a big Steve Stone fan, but I've heard him say this and he's right. It's the pitcher's game. He has to throw something he's comfortable throwing.

When Lackey faces Pence, that will be a weird factor of 10.

What channel will the game be on if the Nationals and Dodgers are still on FS1?

Why is Heyward batting ahead of Baez? Forget the debate about if Heyward should be playing or even on the playoff roster.....why is he hitting ahead of Baez?
