Reminds me of when my company tried to do an affinity lunch with all of the cultural groups. My wife was the planner for the event so the groups set the menu and then she would call catering companies to provide food. Groups included Asia, South American, Indian and african american.

The AA group set a lunch of fried chicken, collared greens, watermelon and mac and cheese. The first 3 caterers she called heard the request and said absolutely not and hung up on her.

I wouldn't say he is "wrong". Just stupid.

Why is he wrong? I'm sure plenty of people were happy to get free chicken. He hurt his campaign by playing into a stereotype. That's why he's stupid.

Stereotyping groups of people IS wrong. Just buy pizza and have a conversation if you want their vote. The fact that he didn't know this shows how far out of touch he is and likely means he's NEVER tried to enter a minority community or have a conversation with them. You can't start outreach once you are running for office.

See, I don't think the guy was going about it from the ignorant perspective as expressed by Chas above. He looks pretty young. Maybe he didn't know the weight of that stereotype. Though someone certainly should have told him. I would guess he thought he was appealing to his constituents. Would you be offended if he were running in a largely Mexican district and he hosted a taco dinner for residents? Probably not. The stereotype doesn't have the same connotations. I think you'd be surprised at what some people don't know. I certainly don't think the guy was trying to sabotage his own campaign by offending his voters and I have a hard time calling a giveaway of free food "wrong".

There is no way you could conclude that the former is true based solely on this. If this were a case of him displaying his racism, it would mean he was sabotaging his own campaign. This is clearly a sign of complete and utter ignorance and incompetence for both the candidate and his campaign.

Chas, it's not just the stereotype. I don't necessarily think all stereotypes are bad. It's that this particular stereotype conjures images of black people as caricatures from a time I'm sure they would all like to forget. Just once, try to understand the nuance of a situation.
