Good thing they got this done before the last ratings book. Mike and Mike are bigger Chicago Icons broadcasting from Bristol. The following footage is on the Score's web site.

This must have been what they showed on the overhead scoreboard.

Here is Pappy doing the ceremonial puck drop. The Score edited out the booing to save Pappy's pride.

Yeah, but people really don't like Pappy. Mostly because he's stupid. I don't care what he says that was a shock to him.

Who did Pappy blame for this most recent horrible ratings period? Did he get around to blaming you yet?

You're the last scape goat of the original cast. He'll never blame the lovely Jen Jen. She's safe for obvious reasons.

i'm of the belief (and always have been) that the abitron ratings system is and always has been flawed.

So, I don't hype ratings nor explain when they are bad......the system itself is flawed and any opinion on why ratings are good or bad (I believe) are nil.

It just gives people like Cox/Feder/etc. an easy column to write....

Just my opinion....

Bullshit. It does more than give columnist something to talk about. It sets the ad rates.

Man, you now talk like Pappy. Pappy was crowing when he won 1 book by a slim margin. They weren't flawed then. Now they are flawed when you guys get destroyed.

I think they are flawed too. I think M&M kill Pappy by a greater margin. Why can't that be the case with the flawed system? Why is the flaw always against Pappy and never in his favor? Funny how that works.

I don't hype nor explain ratings because the way they are kept is unexplainable.

If Mike wants to gloat.....he can.

As for me....i see no point to gload or retract on a "bad performance."

It's flawed...plain and simple. You agreed with me in that.

No offense, but the show hasn't had anything to hype (except for 1 ratings period).

They probably are flawed but Pappy still sucks. I don't think anybody at your station, besides Fred, would argue that.

I just know that B&B and MJH are good shows and their ratings reflect that. Whatever people they do count clearly love Mike and Mike over Pappy. You're luck they can't count everybody.

Good luck with the Sunday show Rock.

Rock....I dont even know where to start.

1. Before you even thought about being in radio, the North never mentioned the system being flawed, but was always first to take bows when the score won the ratings.

2. So if you think the system is flawed, then you must be against the drops when the score is winning and they say "chicagos highest rated sports radio station".

3. The system isnt flawed, the show is and once North is gone or in a different time slot and you get to work your magic for a real show, I suspect you will have a different tune.

4. You cannot have it both ways, for months you battled those against the show, now that the show has been beated to a pulp, you cry flawed system, it just doesnt make sense.

Rock, I like your work, just dont fall into the excuse making that make has mastered since he created this train wreck.

Just for the record

Quote:
Did we win?? yes. Whether it be by .1 or .000000000000001 we still won.

nough said I don't think that there will be a definate winner time and time again though....I personally think that we may win one or two, then it'll switch back and forth....we'll see what happens.

Plus, it's not our 55+ audience which is growing, believe it or not, it's the 18-34 that is. Kinda shocking to me, but hey, everyone's welcome to listen

It doesnt matter how much you win by? Thought it was flawed?

Quote:
Why is it that whenever something good happens for the station, there is always an excuse. Can someone tell me the last time we beat the competition in every other demo than the 25-54 men? Just because we lost the main one which we used to dominate doesn't mean you can't overlook the other demos as well. MJH have a very successful show, and I've said this before, but it's a good listen....so I'm not really surprised that they were #1 in the "men demo".....plus Dahl's family radio is boring, puts me to sleep. Don't get me wrong though, Dahl is a radio legend, but then again it's tiring radio. McNeil will stay at MVP cause he's got no where else to go....whether he'll get what he wants ($$$ wise) or not is not my place to say. But quite frankly the Score is not interested in McNeil coming back. Why would he leave too when he's #1 in the demo? It's just insane to think he would leave where he is king.

Listen kids, we still won....end of story.....period....everything ya'll have brought up about how the ratings suck cause of this and that....well...someone's listening or else we would have lost, right?

Granted, it's just one book but we'll take it. I just hope we (the station) is not satisfied with just winning, I hope we want to get back to basics and stay #1.

Got to go to work now

Rock

FIghting hard for that win, even with a flawed system.

Quote:
RATINGS - Yeah, we lost. Plain and simple, we lost. We had one hell of a June though, between the Skiles pub and announcing that we got the Sox next year, that's a big deal for any station. I'm sure MVP would say the same thing if they were in our position. I'm not here to make excuses, the show could be a little better in some aspects and we're going to work on those as much as possible in the next week or two. Keep in mind though, the reason why the top stations are always at the top is cause people been listening to those shows a long time and it's like old hat to listen to em. WGN will always have the cubs and Spike, WLS will always have Don and Roma, it's programmed listening and one day we hope to get where they are.

Let the excuses begin.

Quote:
First off....what's up fellas!!

The ratings came out again this week, and yet again just like every other past winter book, sports radio did absolutely nothing in the ratings. It's still a neck and neck race with us and MVP, it probably always will be, but I'm sure just like many of you have predicted, the Sox will help us out in the coming books the rest of the year, and you just might see us pull ahead of MVP. Honestly, I don't understand why do sports radio in the months of Dec/Jan/Feb/March....it's just so dreadful, and anyone who knows sports knows that as well.

As for our show, yeah we took a dive, but then again everyone else did too. No spin, no lies, nothing....we had a poor book, but in my mind....I think the last couple of weeks shows with the Bulls making a run into the playoffs, with the Sox on a roll, with the Cubs doing excellent with all the injuries they've incurred, and the whole AJ/Crede haircuts thing in which we got plenty of publicity and airtime on every station in the market and some national....I think we've done some good radio in the last couple of weeks. It's not radio hall of fame by no stretch, but it's been good radio from my listening vantage point.

The morale of the show has never been higher, it's getting easier to come to work now that there is at least something sports-wise to talk about. Baseball is back in swing, and with that the sports climate in Chicago only gets hotter. We've added AJ/Cooper and welcoming back Dempster for his weekly hit on the show. We've added Barry Rozner who never runs out of things to say. Steve Stone is back again, another big hit for the station. The Bookie Priest is a big bit (whether you guys like it or not). We're constantly bringing new ideas to the table, and expect the next 6-8 months to be really good for not only our show, but the station as a whole.

So steve stone, the white sox and the bulls playoff push of a year back should have helped, did it? No.

See Rock, just admit that your leader is a complete dope and he has totally destroyed any repsect he had by letting this death spiral of a show continue. I would have more respect you or north if you would just admit it, its a bad product.

Wait I didnt see this, lets go over it.

Quote:
Couple of things I wanna clear up:
1. We do take calls.....and the phones are always open if you wanna chat.
A- Bullshit, you take at the most, two calls. Your guy North said he didnt have to do it any longer the first week of the show and it has hurt the show.

2. We don't have billboards/signage...but then again, I don't think we ever have had signage anywhere at anytime.

A-The show got them, still bad.

3. MNMS is all topics, and whatever we feel like bringing up...we're not confined by any script/rules/etc. that we have to follow.

A-Whatever Mike wants to talk about and for 4 years it hasnt worked, when does he realize that?

Rock is quite naive to say he doesn't think much of ratings. They don't mean anything to him. You're in radio Rock!! Like it or not your worth and staying power is based on ratings. Ad rates are based on ratings Rock. There has to be something to judge radio hosts.

If you have a show, Rock, and have good numbers with an expiring contract you sure as hell aren't gonna tell your bosses that ratings are flawed and don't mean anything. You're gonna use those ratings to get paid more.

Let's say your numbers are bad. Are you gonna go to your boss and say "We're not changing a thing. The ratings are flawed"?

Rock, why do you think Annie was fired? Why does anybody in radio get fired? If ratings mean nothing all stations would hire their hosts and they would be there until they died.

Ratings mean something Rock. You better realize that if you want to work in radio.

You can't live in this dream world where everything is great if I just close my eyes and put my hands on my ears and say "Ratings are flawed!!! Ratings are flawed!!!!"

Only Pappy can survive this long with such poor numbers. He had a huge deal that somebody foolishly gave him. Most people in radio don't have that luxury to stay because the company can't afford to fire them. They get a chance and they better produce.

Because a "Chicago Radio Icon" couldn't lose to a couple of "Eastern Seaboard Programming Network" mopes doing their show from Connecticut by such a wide margin. He just couldn't. It would upset the order of the universe or something. At least the universe Mike and Rock inhabit.

North is such a loser, it's not even funny. No, wait, I take that back. It is funny. It's hilarious! When the Score finally realizes they're flushing millions down the shitter to have this jerk-off host mornings and demote him, will the Hawks revoke his status as a Chicago Radio Icon? How does the revocation ceremony work? Does he go out to center ice and have the jersey the Hawks gave him torn off of him or what?

The removal of the Boos is pretty bad. You could hear them in the first few seconds.

Funny thing I heard North saying that you really couldn't hear them and it wasn't that bad.

Wrongo!

And Rock, didn;t you guys all go out for type of Cleebration when the MNMS won a ratings book once?

Rock, you are the sound man extraoridnaire, but the show needs a full overhaul.

This is all fine and dandy, but it's also the unbiased opinion of Arbitron that Mike North used to make a boatload of coin in the early days of the Score. It's tough to have it both ways now that things are going south.

I guess MJH in the PM drive time vs. the Wise Guys, and Brandmeier/Dahl/Mike&Mike in the AM drive time vs. TMNMS are the major leagues compared to Kathy and Judy or whatever those housewife hags with microphones were back in the day.

I believe the flaws in the system give people like your management team and you yourself here some easy excuses to make.

Kind of odd how that same management team was trumpeting the success of the SCORE for the past 3 months though.

Again... you can't have it both ways.

You would have been better served blaming it all on Anne Maxfield, Jerry Krause and Dave Wannstedt.

....but you're still alright in my book Rock - Pappy has a way of making his underlings a bit delusional.

Since she is part of the show and I have seen her at remotes, I feel she is open game, so I will say that she needs to stop dressing like she is 25, she doesnt have the looks or body for it.

Beardown - you've correlated ratings to Ad revenue a couple of times, but in The Score's case that doesn't appear to "bear" out. From Feder's January 15th column ...

Here is the 2007 revenue ranking, as reported by 29 Chicago radio stations (followed by total revenues and share of the market):

That's the station's total ad revenue. Maybe they get more ad revenue cuz they have the Sox. Now, they might not be turning a great profit on the Sox cuz they paid big to get them. Maybe Murph, Hanley and Mully do better than their ESPN competition. B&B help that total too.

I didn't think I was making a bold statement. Ad revenue is determined by ratings. Obviously the more listeners you have the higher the ad billing.

In that list it says that the Score had a 4.3 share to ESPN's 2.6. That proves my point. More listeners means higher ad revenue. Obvioulsy others at the Score helped to beat ESPN. Pappy didn't help. We know Pappy has lost all but one ratings period to Mike and Mike.

I honestly dont know how anyone can stand more than 5 minutes of this garbage show. He sucked on middays, he sucks even worse in the AM. 65 minute commute for me and I would rather listen to commercials on AM 1000 than this garbage. I swear 99% of the show has nothing to do with anything.

I hope they ship his ass to NY where he was interviewing at.

And the boys on AM 1000 in the afternoon "saloon" better keep an eye out too. Non stop crap hardly ever sports related on their show too. I like M&M ok, but B&B wipe the afternoon saloon any day of the week.

Beardown:

The numbers you quote are a percentage of dollars spent on radio ads in this market. Not listenership for the respective stations.

In this case, the Score runs FAR more commercials than MVP. Also, percentage amount of the ad revenue for them comes from payments from NIU the Hawks, and DePAul. The Sox bring in a fair amount of cash for their broadcasts also.

I wonder if the they have enough Sox ad revenue to to break even on their rights fees though.
