It doesn't feel like 2003. It really doesn't.

I'm not sure about that. I was sure we had that series. Let's not lose focus until it's over.

Chapman isn't a 2 inning guy or a guy that you can bring in to bail you out in the 8th.

That was an interesting move Roberts made to make sure he was out of the game. Personally, I didn't think Maddon was going to bring him out again anyway, but we'll never know. From a strict numbers perspective walking Coghlan there was just wrong. The "expected runs" jump up so much by loading the bases that it simply can't be countered by not having to face Chapman for two or three more outs. But that's the perspective of a mathematician, not a big league hitter who has to face a guy throwing 104 mph.

I thought the worst move of the inning was intentionally walking Heyward. That made no sense.

I didn't care for that either. You're walking one of the worst hitters in the lineup to get to the hottest guy. I guess they wanted to set up the double play. In a way it worked. They popped Baez up and probably should have gone right at Coghlan who hasn't batted much the last few weeks. Even then, they had Montero buried on a two-strike count and fat Blanton threw him a BP pitch.

Threw him BP on the 0-1 pitch too. Went back to the bad slider well once too often.

I wonder when Maddon realizes this.

If he is so confident in his bullpen that he can pull his #1 starter after a 77 pitch 6 inning outing, then he should have no problem using someone else in the 8th inning. He better give Montero a cut of his playoff check.

i just stumbled across a cubs scorecard from april 24 2014 and took a look at the lineup:

1) Bonifacio - CF
2) Valbuena - 2B
3) "Superpud" - 1B (yes it's rizzo)
4) Schierholtz - RF
5) Castro - SS
6) Olt - 3B
7) Castillo - C
8) Kalish - LF
9) Edlose Fuckiing Jackson - P

Manager: Rick Renteria

obviously in this day and age baseball teams have a lot of turnover (arizona's lineup had a bermuda triangle of cliff pennington, brooks kieschnick, and tony campana FFS) but still that's a pretty fucking impressive overhaul to go from that to where we are now. In lieu of the old "Notes" section for the pitchers part of cubs scorecards, i wrote over pitcher slots 4-5-6 to say of arizona SP "Mike Ballslinger" -- "imagine if he had to face a MLB lineup"

"hey [the cubs] lost but at least rizzo hit one!" (off of my guy oliver "ol dirty" perez, no less!)

Image

^^^ = brooks kieschnick today. and every time i type his first name i have to go back and correct "brooke" =D

Wow, what a game.

Maddon poorly managed the pitching last night, but I disagree with those who think he consistently does. I like the fact that he doesn't dick around when someone doesn't look good. Last night, Lester looked fine, though.

The pressure ofthe playoffs appear to be getting to him. He needs to relax and FOCUS.

Yeah, the bullpen is always an unknown. Hell, that's the reason the Cubs won game 4 against SF. Gotta ride the starter as far as he can take you as long as he's doing fine.

Need relievers beside Chapman to get tough outs too.

Yes.

This season will get Theo past Jim Hendry in Cubs success.

That's why it was a no brainer to give up Schwarber for Miller, Chapman plus Miller = World Series Champion.

 that is an awesome pic of Montero and Fowler

Here is a sync up of the video and Pat hughes audio.

Chapman is a strange dude. When the camera pans to him he does not even look like he cracked a smile.

I know it's his catch phrase and all, but that ball didn't "have a chance," it was destined for the seats from the moment Montero made contact.

Overrated announcer. That home run call was awful.

That is weird. You would have thought Montero grounded out. Did the translator tell him it was a HR?

I have a feeling we're gonna win tonight.

We're not going to crush Kershaw but will do enough to beat him.

I think Pat likes to hedge his bets because it's the Cubs and anything could happen, no matter how good the hit looks. The ball could collide in midair with an incoming meteor. That's probably a ground rule double.

He's not overrated, but I must say that after hearing Senor and "smart" fans talk for years about how Ron Santo brings Pat Hughes down, he hasn't been quite the same since Ronnie died.
