http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/17/world/middleeast/in-isis-held-mosul-beheadings-and-hints-of-resistance-as-battle-nears.html

Mosul’s residents are hoarding food and furtively scrawling resistance slogans on walls, while the city’s Islamic State rulers have feverishly expanded their underground tunnel network and tried to dodge American drones.

After months of maneuvering, the Iraqi government’s battle to reclaim Mosul, the sprawling city whose million-plus population lent the most credence to the Islamic State’s claim to rule a fledgling nation, has finally begun. In the early hours Monday, an announcement by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi of the campaign’s opening was accompanied by artillery barrages and a rush of armored vehicles toward the front a few miles from the city’s limits.

Those forces will fight to enter a city where for weeks the harsh authoritarian rule of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, ISIL or Daesh, has sought to crack down on a population eager to either escape or rebel, according to interviews with roughly three dozen people from Mosul. Among them were refugees who managed to sneak out in recent weeks and residents reached by contraband cellphones in the city.

The offensive to liberate Mosul from ISIS control has begun, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a televised statement early Monday.
"Our dearest people in Nineveh province, the victory bell has rung, and the operations to liberate Mosul have begun," he said. "I am announcing today the beginning of these heroic operations to liberate you from the brutality and terrorism of ISIS. God willing, we will meet soon on the ground of Mosul where we will all celebrate the liberation and your freedom."

actually shit, does anyone have a means of contacting pappy? i'm thinking he needs to do a (one time?) bit where he dresses up as the "bookie imam" and his usual bookie priest schtick can be changed up to have jokes where he talks about teams "blowing up" the spread and "winning enough $$$ for a ticket to paradise where my 72 virgins are waiting" -- and just imagine pappy in full arabic/imam getup with some kind of brownface, an obviously fake beard, and a world class accent delivered by the master impersonator.

seriously someone get this idea to pappy STAT cuz you know the winning formula of the bookie priest + topical edgy "OMFG HE ACTUALLY WENT THERE!" poking a little fun at exaggerated stereotypes about our islamic brothers and sisters = the onramp to the highway of international media superstardom!!!

#ImJustSayin...............#HabibsJihads... WOOPS TYPO! i meant #HabibsHijabs! all those squiggly little words are all the same to me!

I heard a clip from some CBS reporter and she was finishing up her report under gunfire from the sound of it. Also why is it only British reporters doing the gritty action reporting. American reporters have lost their TWTW.

This is what the third of fourth time we are trying to get it back? Every time we grab it we pull out and let the bad guys back in. Just shows what a great job the Pentagon and Washington is doing.

its not that simple

the biggest problem is most arab countries dont really see isis as a big threat. dont forget the middle east was at war way before isis happened, and america is the only ones that are hell bent on defeating them. the rest of the middle east is much more worried about their rivals
