I will be stunned if the Cubs don't tee off on Hill..I hope that loss scared Maddon enough to make some changes.

Everyone is underestimating Hill. This is not my superstitious negativity, either. Hill has been damn good this year, and he's the type of pitcher the Cubs struggle with. This will be no cake walk.

He probably realized it wasn't too bright to give your worst hitter more at-bats than necessary.

I'd be okay if he batted Heyward 9th. I would literally rather have any starting pitcher the Cubs have (except MAYBE Lester) get more AB's than Heyward.

That may be an emotional thought but you have to know that it's really not correct. Travis Wood might be the best hitting pitcher in the game and his career OPS+ is about 70 points less than Heyward's.

It's partially emotional, but Arrieta does have a higher OPS than Heyward this year by nearly 100 points. I realize he's only had 65 at-bats, but he's also the son of God.

I'm not too worried about Rich Hill tomorrow. Arrieta is going to wang whip the Dodgers.

Fowler, Baez,Bryant, Zobrist will crush that curve ball-92 mph heater combo ...gotta put Rizzo down in order n bench Jhey and they should put a 5 spot on Hill before the 5th inning.

like I said, ask the Nationals. Sure, he was pulled early but that's probably the luxury the Dodgers will have again.

Hill bounced around for sure but he did have good numbers this season.

Some cracker thought it was and the nickname stuck.

Actually, it's the way Mexicans pronounce Dodgers. And Fernando Valenzuela made them a lot of Mexican fans.

He's been one of the best starting pitchers in the game this season. A lefty who throws a big curveball (a pitch that we are the worst in the league at hitting) for over 40% of his pitches.

I'm sure we'll crush him and this won't be another Matt Moore situation.

Hardly.

/dʒ/: Sound between "ch" and Spanish "ll" (which is the same as "j" in English)

The only ones that say Doyers are the ones that are unused to the sound as it does not exist exactly in the Spanish language. It wouldn't be the "proper" way to pronounce it.

I thought your ignorance was limited to Arabs.

I believe the Cubs will win tomorrow because Jake will pitch real well. But if you recall, the one trade I wanted the Cubs to make at the deadline (and the only deal I wanted to see Contreras or Torres involved in) was Contreras, Soler and Glyber Torres to Milwaukee for Ryan Braun and Jonathon Lucroy. The reason being, they don't hit lefties as well and Braun kills southpaws. Soler actually hits right handed pitching better than left. Hill when healthy has been very good the past year and if he proves tough in this game, I will not be shocked. Fortunately, the Santa Anna winds will be supplying very hot dry desert air that will help hitters in the next couple games there. There are supposed to be very warm and hitter friendly conditions. Hopefully it gets guys like Russell, Zobrist, Rizzo and Fowler going. Bryant, Baez and Contreras could use some help.

I know for a fact that in proper (ludicrous concept when you're dealing with a language that straddles an ocean) Castilian Spanish you are supposed to pronounce a double ll like a regular old l.

Sure, but hasn't Castilian Spanish taken a backseat to Mexican Spanish as the language's dialect of record, as it were, not unlike Received Pronunciation yielding to Western American English? Castilian lisps its sibilants, too.

On our side of the ocean I would imagine so, but in Europe probably not. Even RP is still proper English in Europe. Pay attention to German or French anglophone and you'll hear a lot of RP, the really good ones can sound nearly British if you're not paying attention. There's a couple exceptions, zero for instance, but those exceptions typically come from cognates that American English borrows from non-Engish indo-European langauges and not the other way around.

As for Spain, I mean there's a complicated history with that country and Spanish is hardly universally accepted throughout the Iberian Peninsula or even Spain itself. Catalan is closer to French and Basque is Uralic-level nonsense. So Spain is a bit of a weak leader to start and because of their linguistic divisions you're not going to find the kind of strident zealots for Spanish in Spain that would find in France (or Quebec...) for French. But even in France (NOT QUEBEC) you'll see a lot of Arabic words (kif-kif, which is kind of like the French word même but used exclusively in comparisons) that drift into French and are pretty well accepted. And France is probably the European country that most strongly holds onto its linguistic heritage.

I think if you try and not pronounce Doyers like a Harlem Ave. pollock it makes sense as the Spanish pronunciation of Dodgers, I think. You just have to pretend that second 'd' doesnt exist.

My maternal grandparents lived in El Paso, TX. You can listen to Dodgers games on the radio there, or at least you could in the 80's. That is how the broadcasters said it, Los Doyers.

Yeah, the Dutch seem to be the best at sounding British.

 I'm fluent in Spanish, you dumb cocksucker. And I grew up speaking the language with Mexicans from Michoacan in the heart of the Valenzuela era.

You're probably the least educated guy on this board, yet you know everything. Funny how that is.

Correct. And with a long "o" instead of an "ah".

Similarly, the idiot reporters thought Ozzie Guillen was making fun of Gordon Beckham by calling him "Bacon". That isn't actually what Ozzie said, although he seemed to embrace it after the fact. Originally he simply pronounced "Beckham" like a Spanish speaker- Bay-kahm, and the beat guys thought he said "Bacon".

On the topic of the Dodgers and pronunciation, is there a better Dodger player name to do in Vin's voice than Clayton Kershaw? It's the best since Orel Hershiser and Don Drysdale.
