I need help. I worked from about 00-05. 2 jobs, neither spectacular. Left the first job after about a year and a half, stayed at the other for 3-4ish years. Both were data entryesque with some stat analysis but I'd like to apply for a retail job. I don't know how to bridge the 2. I'm starting from scratch, I know the departments of my last employers but I don't know anything else. I don't know how to put a resume together or what to say. The idea of a resume is crazy to me. I have nothing for 12 years but volunteer stuff. How do I put that together?

There was one job posted that I liked about 10 months ago and disappeared but is now back up. I don't know if there is turnover or what. I think I'd like it and it would be a good fit. I'm so excited at the prospect of it. I want to send it tomorrow but I think all I can pull together is a header with my name, email, and phone number. I'm really excited and all kinds of stupid right now. I have no experience in what I'm applying for but I think I can do it and be good at it.

So what goes on a resume and what are strengths/buzzwords etc?

Use words like developed, initiated, constructed, etc.

I don't remember or think I did any of that.

The best I can say is I'll show up on time, replicate/duplicate what you want, and work hard. I have no experience, I just would like the opportunity to ...have the job. I know I could do it.

Based on showing up on time, I would hire you!

Read the job description and requirements carefully and then tie in your accomplishments at your previous jobs and volunteer work to what is in the job description. For example if "Detail Oriented" is a requirement then bullet some past accomplishments which highlight your detail orientation.

Also try to get an "in" in the company. If you are not on it, hop on LinkedIn and see if you know anybody that knows anybody at that company that can get you an intro. Although it can take a little time to build up a LinkedIn network.

Good luck,

Use "buzz words" directly from the job listing. I don't know the type of volunteer work you've done, but you can get creative with it to find anything that remotely ties into what is listed in the job description.

Interacting with "customers/clients"
Project management (organizing a rummage sale, rearranging a filing system, coordinating carpools...)
Ability to quickly master new technologies
Creative problem solving
Time management skills

"Team". Everything nowadays is about, for and with the "Team"...

Good luck, Spaulding!

Youre coming across as a young 20 year old

Nobody wants to train a new hire. Act confident like the job will be easy, because you have done plenty of similar jobs like it

Its ok to lie a little, dont say you volunteered just act like those were jobs.

Always ask for more than you really expect. Asking for too little exposes you as inexperienced.

Stress that you were never "caught" stealing anything at your previous job. Use the quotes too.

Obviously list the volunteer stuff. Shows you weren't sitting around eating bon bons for the last 11 years.

Maybe I am missing something... What type of retail job requires a resume? I was under the impression most of these jobs have a online portal where you MUST submit for the job so they have a rock hard HR department trail of all hiring matters.

Basically, for a retail job, if you say you'll show up on time when scheduled, that's about all it takes.

Exactly what kind of job are you applying for?

Is this something at a mall?

Like Mike said, I'd be surprised if you needed a resume for that.

It's a little hard to give advice without knowing your situation, but other people have already given good suggestions: make sure you tailor your resume and cover letter specifically for the open position; frame your volunteer activities as work experience; try to describe your work/volunteer history in terms that are relevant to the position you are seeking; be succinct & use bullet points; make sure you proofread carefully, as some hiring managers will immediately discard resumes that contain misspellings, grammatical errors, or typos.
