There was a 2-3 year period where a teenage Anthony Michael Hall was the best comedic actor in the business, bar none.

I have no idea why he stopped bringing the funny because he had great comedic timing. That bar scene in Weird Science is maybe the greatest example of his work because there had to be a lot of ad libbing going on.

"party's over said the girl" brings me to tears to this day and it was such an insignificant line

In a shocking upset given the quality of the movie, I got lucky after the Johnny B Good movie.

He was likable and entertaining. I never thought of him as particularly funny. I always liked some of Steve Martin and Chevy Chase's work back then.

Martin- All of Me and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Chase- Both Fletch movies and Vacation

Plenty of others for both. They just seemed naturally, genuinely funny to me. Anthony Michael Hall just played a stereotypical nerd and was picked on, right? Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club & Weird Science? The football movie would be an exception, but I don't recall much funny about that movie.

That says more about your taste in comedic acting than anything else.

Re watch a movie like 16 Candles. He steals that movie. That scene after the party where he and Jake are talking is a good example of his work in that film.

1983-85
Vacation- he stole scenes from Chevy
Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club
Weird Science

Three years and four movies that are played regularly to this day. Maybe he had great management who found him great roles with great writing. I would argue he brought as much to those roles as they brought to him. He is memorable in each of those movies despite not being the star in the first three.

I watched Weird Science for the first time a few months ago.

The scene where he gets drunk with the black guys and starts going on a rant in a pimp voice is the funniest movie scene I've ever seen. I was in tears laughing and couldn't breathe.

Everyone should watch that scene at least once.

He burned out fast. But he was funny with his subtle slights, silly faces, and klutzy manner. Fletch is pure genius.
