You need to check your Cub fan privilege. The Cub fan is like the white man on top. Cub fans hate as much as Sox fans, but the hatred manifests itself in different ways. In 2005 the Cub fan acted like baseball wasn't even being played. And you can see that attitude on this board to this very day with the "Sox got lucky" threads. Cub fan bernstein is even promoting it on the radio. I'm not sure if Bill Murray even knows the Sox won in 2005. In any case, he and MANY Cub fans consider it insignificant.

I'm a lifelong Sox fan. I don't want to see the Cubs win but if they do I'll be happy for them and their fans.

Cub fan ambivalence towards the Sox is a big myth unsurprisingly promoted by Cub fans. In years in which the Sox were decidedly better than the Cubs Cubs fans clung to the attendance issue as a means of demonstrating superiority. Things like the surrounding neighborhoods, and who had the better bars were all a big deal. T.V. ratings were touted and the whole "if it were the Cubs this city would be turning on its collective heads with excitement.

I happened to be in Pippins on Rush street for one of the Sox Astros games and the people that weren't openly rooting against the Sox were acting ambivalent. There definitely wasn't a root for the Sox because of Chicago solidarity movement in effect.

I wouldn't say the ambivalence is a myth, but rather that it's an aggressive and specifically tailored act used to put Sox fans "in their place". It's not real ambivalence at all.

I will never spend another dime in a Grant DePorter establishment after Game 3 of the 2005 World Series when the little redhead managing the Harry Caray's in Rosemont unabashedly rooted for the Astros throughout the game.

I don't hate the White Sox but just because I don't root for them to lose doesn't mean I'll ever root for them to win. I'll tune into a Sox game here and there when nothing else is on because I love baseball, nothing more.

The whole "be happy for Chicago" attitude is lame. Pick a team.
Agreed. There should be no animosity. The White Sox did it first and that is all that matters.

The Sox got there first. Even f the Cubs win 3 WS in the next decade, the Sox won the race. That will never change.

If the Cubs dont win it this year, MANY posts will be made avout the Indians being better than the Astros, and the Cubs lack of home field advantage.

I actually like the Sox fans not showing up when the team blows, if the Cub fans had that attitude we wouldn't have sucked for so long..its why the Bears n Bulls continually suck and no major changes take place.

You may understand later that a World Series win takes away all the hate.

The antagonism is for fun for the past decade.

In 2005, I was shocked to see any Cub fan root for the Astros (a team that had been perpetually dominating the division and kicking their ass year in and year out). I was happy to see those idiots lose.

Similarly, I'm shocked to see Sox fans supporting the Indians. It's a division rival, you should hate the Indians far more than the Cubs.

You're touching on the thing that disturbs me, particularly with regard to some of these celebrity Cub "fans". There's the promotion of the idea that only their interest makes the Cubs significant. And that ties into the attendance talk. I don't question Bill Murray's bona fides as a Cub fan, but he does manage to project this feeling that, "Well, I'm here, now the game can start."

Ya, at that time I hated those Astros. Biggio, Berkman, Bagwell (a shell of himself at that point but still alive)and Clemens. I was happy to see the Sox win.

Yeah. It's a very small minority of my friends that are Sox fans but they are out there.

I don't know one Sox fan that wants the Injuns to lose, not a single one.

I want to say the Sox/Tribe "rivalry" has been doormat since the late 90s. No real bad blood as both teams have seemingly alternated competitive seasons for the most part once 2000 came along.

Other than Biggio, the Astros team was really an unlikable Bunch. This year's Cubs and Indians are both full of young players that seem to do things the right way. Lackey is probably the biggest shithead of them all, and even he isnt terrible.

Fuck Cleveland.

Much like last season with Royals/Mets, I caught shit for predicting a Mets win from Cub fan friends because they were salty about the Cubs losing. Tough shit...I hate my division opponents more than I have any actual feeling about the Cubs doing anything.

It really seems to be a personal frame of reference. If you know a few "opposite" fans that are asshats, then ALL "opposite" fans are asshats. I don't think there's a large movement either way, it's lots of individual experiences.

For the record, I think you're ALL asshats.

I'd agree that there is more than a few large movements rooting for the south side.

Bill Murray wasn't at Sox playoff games like Cusack, or wearing a Sox hat on TV like Vedder. He gets points for not being a phony.
