I have a 3-hour drive today, and I'm leaving at 12:45 on the dot so that I can quietly reflect in the car with my daughter as we listen to Dan shower us with anecdotes of how the face of sports has forever changed, and how the delicious brains of Ivy League baseball minds has supplanted physical talent as the supreme factor in determining winners and losers.

Should be fun and upbeat.

Edit: Also, Terry's back! Almost forget. Can he bring a bit of sanity?

But Terry's back, so there's that.

Baez and Contreras are Hendry guys. Theo Epstein has shown nothing but class thanking Hendry in his interviews.

Jimmy, I have a feeling you would still like Hendry to be the GM

No,but like i said in the White Sox thread,Theo & Jed had a lot of luck involved with their 3 year plan of planned sucking. I will never agree that was the right way.

Nothing shocking from "The King of Assholes".

If he does it will probably only last until the end of the week, tops.

Get ready for Black Eddie Haskell to deliver the creepiest "Hi, Uncle Teary!" you've ever heard at around 5:50.

Any historical burden was and is on you, not on the Cubs themselves as on Saturday night they advanced to their first World Series since 1945.

The last team I want to see win the WS is the Cubs, but seeing those 80+ year olds tearing up in disbelief, that was cool to see. The fuck is so wrong with reflecting a bit on just how long this journey has been? Insufferable twat. Yep, that about does it, TP.

Most of his articles are just starting with a premise and then stating the same premise 5 different ways in 10 paragraphs. So, you probably got the gist.

of course there was a lot of luck...there was a lot of luck in the Bobby Hill trade too that netted Aramis and Kenny Lofton. If they win the WS, and yes the playoffs are a crapshoot, it's over...

I never liked the plan, but when it meets with success, by any way possible, you congratulate the planners.

Terry walks into the SCORE studio for the first time in months...

Bernstein: Hey dude.

Terry: Hey.

(That's it for their interaction)

Drinky: (Crying like a baby he embraces his radio Dad.)

5 minutes later...

Terry: Alright, let go of me for the love of God!!!!! Eeeeeeee eeeeeeee.

This was the quote that got me. I know he wants to believe that because that is basically the entire point of that mess.

But, it's not true. They do inherit "some shared history". The same way Presidents that live in the White House inherit some shared history or radio hosts that take over a drivetime slot at a sports station inherit some shared history.

It may not mean much to the players on the field or it may mean a great deal. But, like it or not, Anthony Rizzo shares some history with Ernie Banks and Mark Grace and Larry Biittner because they played the same position in the same uniform on the same field.

I think it's 1000 words of garbage for Dan Bernstein to say that no Cub players care about the past or the fans. Some probably don't give a shit. Some may think it is very cool. He doesn't know. He just wants to believe it.

Why were the older Cubs players even there then? Get Kerry Wood and all those old losers out of there. They are taking up space that paying customers could have.

Exactly. And it most certainly does belong to the fans. Because if the fans didn't care Theo Epstein might be teaching a high school American history class in Brookline and Javy Baez would likely be working a drive-thru window in Jacksonville.

if that is true then you are results oriented rather than process oriented

A results oriented person shouldn't be praising the process.

This crosstalk should really be something. Terry's health will probably remain a mystery and instead we will have "The King of Assholes" tell us we are wrong as fans to be happy.

It's obvious the organization agrees with you as they invite old players to the game and sell Wrigley Field t shirts.

Also, Theo is very open about his knowledge and appreciation of the history of the game

I'll say it again: the most academically credentialed people on this site are the ones that dislike Dan the most. I don't pretend that academically credentialed is the equivalent of smart. Dan does, which is why I used the terminology.

The people who seem to love him the most are mildly educated bourgeois who think that agreement with him gives them status.

I don't understand the point of writing like this?

"Your devotion is unrequited despite the stated banalities and blandishments..."

Is your audience a group of PhD literature candidates? Does he hear the people who call the show? It may take three callers to get to a combined IQ level of 100.

Actually, thinking about it, I'm underselling how bad his thought is.

A good portion of the Cub players absolutely know and care to some extent about the history. I'd guess the majority. They're professional athletes. They are looking for any edge, any thought to motivate them. Hell, Dick Butkus used to make up shit to motivate him. Jordan, quite naturally, held a high school grudge for 25 years.

There's no question those guys walk out to "their office" in June and see 40k fans out there and think to themselves what it would be like here in a NLCS or World Series. They aren't doing it for the fans. But that doesn't mean that fans can't motivate them. History can motivate them. Among other things.

In summary, that article should be humped by a cow in heat.
