There is an actual story on the 'net that Dexter Fowler becomes the first African American to play in the World Series for the Cubs (since he is leading off.)

It makes the Cubs look like they were against blacks in the game more than most but...

The Cubs were more racially progressive than most. For decades,the only retired numbers were for Williams and Banks. I bet they were the only professional team in any sport to have never retired a white guy's jersey until recently. They had some pretty good white players in the 20's and 30's.

Not really. I don't think Baker and Banks came along until '53. But at least they weren't as bad as the Red Sox.

Cubs last played in WS in 1945. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. Not really news that this team would have the first black players to play in the WS in franchise history.

Yes,really. Feel free to check every professional teams retired jersey list. You might find an NBA team that is a newer franchise but I doubt it. I commend the Cubs for not throwing a white man in to the mix "just because", but a Phil Cavarretta might have been worthy.

He was a .292 career hitter in 20 seasons with the Cubs. I think that's impressive.

On another note, John Lackey will be the 51st Red Neck to play in a World Series game for the Cubs.

Because in 1907 and 1908 they were mostly red necks. There were a few in 1945 as well.

I'm not angry and I haven't put any angry thoughts in a Cub thread. I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. I'm just telling you, the Cubs weren't a particularly progressive franchise when it came to integration and Phil Cavarretta was nothing more than a decent ballplayer. Those are facts. I'm sorry a little success is making you so tense.

the cubs were actually pretty hard on robinson that first year--as were the other NL teams....I think larry doby actually debuted at comiskey, but i have no idea how sox players or fans treated him...his cleveland teammates weren't too fond of him early on, but that would change.
