Do they really need Schwarber to win this series?

My answer to that would be no.

My answer would be "maybe". But it only matters if he can hit. They don't need 0-4s. I'm baseball smart to know that.

Well he is not worse than the other options.

Exactly.

It's impossible to know whether he will help the roster or not by being on it.

What's known to an absolute certainty is that if he's not on the roster, he can't help it.

It's not particularly insightful but nonetheless true.

In for a penny, in for a pound ... to paraphrase Captain Marko Aleksandrovich Ramius, "let him shwing".

If it turns out to be the wrong decision and somehow costs the Cubs they will roast management and Maddon.

Because Schwarber the DH did what exactly to torpedo the series?

This current regime will make the right decision as they have so far. I trust them. Why not?

I can't say if it's right or wrong. Hopefully they make the right call. If he can't hit then those at bats can cost.

He replaces rob z who is not needed especially in this series and was never even used last series. How is that a bad thing. Soler has looked like shit at the plate. This is the perfect situation for schwarber to contribute. DH in Cleveland and pinch hit in Chicago. If he were taking the bat out of someone good's hands then there may be a discussion but he isn't.

This is how I see it as well. And as right hand dominant as the Indians are it couldn't hurt having another good lefty bat in the order.

Where will he bat in the order? I am thinking 6 (I cannot count...)

Fowler
Bryant
Rizzo
Zobrist
Contreras/Russell
Schwarber
Baez
Heyward
Russell/Montero/Ross

rob z? who is that? is that one of those ass-end-of-the-bullpen guys who was a sept/ish callup that had me going "literally who?" when i'd see his name listed as "warming up" in the bullpen.

anyways, i always figured that at "worst" schwarber would take a roster spot from a guy like chris "cockland" coghlan, who i certainly wouldn't miss. i don't think HEIL SZCZUR (aka "The Man with the Magic Underwear") has been making any playoff rosters.... and lord knows that if maddon is afraid to bring in bullpen guys like hector rondon or justin grimm or even travis wood then he's really gonna not go for "rob z" / "literally who?" and then it's like "hey why not try to sprinkle a little baseball magic on this'ere world series?"

does babe fucking schwarber end up getting the giant (PH?) HR off of andrew miller to change the fate of a game/series/etc? stranger things have happened... and MLB loves their "stories" [cue mental image of hobbled kirk gibson fist-pumping here] so i reckon this babe fucking schwarber stuff is right in their wheelhouse tbh

I know the "Do no wrong" Cubs fans will tell me I'm dumb but if I'm one of the everyday players on the team who actually contributed to having the best record and then getting to the World Series I'd be a little bit upset when I'm sitting on the bench while this guy walks in and takes away my spot after being gone all year in the batting order because the Cubs desperately want to turn him into a folk hero.

I had this thought as well but I was concerned not only about the guy on the bench but about the one that is left off the roster completely.

A 22 year old rookie hit 5 home runs in 27 post season ABs last year. I'm not concerned about the guy left off the roster. He'll understand.

Stay out of Cubs business.

You can watch the dynasty but you may not comment on it.

I think the guy left off the roster might be a bullpen arm because the lack of moves needed due to the DH. I'm more concerned with them starting Heyward over Coghlin in RF.

Len Kasper said this morning that his "gut feeling is that Schwarber will not have any rust." Ok, Len, whatever....maybe they should just cancel spring training.

I'm with BRick on this one. Not a fan of the move.

Don't care about the feelings of a bottom bullpen guy who hasn't contributed to their success anyway.

Another classic Len moment.

Did he say it with a overly emphasized guttural inflection in his voice?

Schwarber will absolutely have rust and he could very well suck.

The reason I don't care is because it's low risk.

This is what I do not get? Why is it low risk? If he gets 8 at bats as a DH in first two games at Cleveland and goes 0-8 that is a big risk. The reason I wouldn't do it is because it is a risk and not a sure thing. He might hit 3 homers but I would be afraid of the 0-8 when I could use another player to give me better odds for hits and RBI.

Who DHs in pittmike's world if Schwarber is unavailable?

Very low risk to me. If he comes back and is hopelessly overmatched, Contreras goes back into the DH spot. He is bumping LaStella , Coughlin, or RobZ. None of them have been with the team the entire year. Actually, I'd bet Schwarber has been traveling with the team more than any of them this year.

Agree. The Cubs will play him not because they think he can contribute but because they want him to be a folk hero.
