I always appreciate when they give me total access to a bathroom and maybe a couple bottles of water or some soda.
You don't have to tip. It's a good way to get some freebies though. If I get a tip I'll drop a case of filters and do a few extras that I normally dont... such as neat stuff like an outlet along with the on off switch. Very handy.

I had the HVAC company out yesterday and the tech checked everything out. He said it all was running pretty well and even went on the roof to
check the CO2 levels. All comfortably within the regular levels. He did suggest replacing the capacitor. I told him I would mull it over as he
wanted $60 and told me it was like a 5 minute job. The other reason I told him to hold off is he let me know the furnace was 20 years old and
the water heater was 15 years old and that I might want to start thinking about replacing the furnace and definitely should consider replacing
the water heater first if I had to choose one or the other. Might be looking at just swapping out both and moving on with my life. He quoted
me $1000 on the water heater and roughly $3000 for the furnace. Does this sound within the range of reasonable? Do you think I can get
a little break on the price if I get them both done or does it not usually work that way?

It wasn't an official quote, he just gave me a rough estimate. They have someone that comes out and does estimates apparently.
My house is 1100 sq ft tops so I shouldn't really need some kind of huge unit. Sorry I can't give you any more info than that,
I'm pretty ignorant about the HVAC info, among other things.

3k for a standard 80% furnace sounds about right. 1000 for a water heater sounds good. I usually quote 1190 for a 40gal standard.
Your furnace will be more expensive for 90%+ efficiency, for two or three (or more) stages of heating (lower input settings for milder days) or for more powerful upgraded variable speed blower motors.

Ok, sounds good. Do companies offer any kind of price break when doing both jobs at the same time? Also, I know this question has many variables involved
but if you were to exchange both units at once is this a job that can be completed in one day?

It can probably be done on the same day. As far as discounts for doing both at the same time hard to say... some areas require that's two different trades so maybe no discount since there's a different crew for each job.

I was offered a pretty good discount if I did the air conditioning at the same time but that is because they were so closely connected.

That makes sense. A furnace can be swapped out in 6 hours on average. An air conditioner can be swapped out in 6 hours too... but both can be done in 8 or so if done at the same time. So much easier to do both rather than each over a couple years.

I have a switch, like a power switch, on the furnace. For the past week, the furnace hasn't always kicked in. About every other day where it's set at 70 and the thermostat is down to 64.

I go to the switch and flip it on and off a couple times and it kicks in. Should the switch be replaced or the thermostat or something else?

Just got bad news from the HVAC guy...my 16-yr old Lennox furnace needs a new heat exchanger. He quoted $1,150 and said that would only buy another 2-4 years. If I replace the whole furnace, he recommended the Lennox EL296 or SLP98V, the latter of which is variable speed. That's probably going to be $5-6k.

While the guy says the SLP98V is top of the line, it looks like the model is at least 8 years old. Is it still considered state of the art or are there better alternatives? My current furnace, which was elite for its time, is a two-stage unit....would I need new thermostats if I go variable? (I have one furnace but a two-zone Arzel zoning system for upper and lower floors.)

Not planning on staying in the house more than another 2-3 years. I am afraid if I do just the heat exchanger, I could still have to replace the whole thing in a few years.

Advice?

I would suggest getting some more bids. We just replaced our 18-year old Amana. One of our bids was also over 6k but we eventually settled on a Trane from Abt for $3,600.

edit: It is an S9V2 variable speed blower with 2 stage heat.
