I was down in Jupiter, FL last week at the Marlins and Cards spring training facility. There's a Cuban restaurant nearby where we went to lunch and Jose was a regular there. He would come in at night for the Salsa music and on sundays to play dominos. Everyone said that he was just a genuine down to earth great guy and they miss him dearly. It's so sad.

you know, right when the story first broke a day or two later SI or someone did a story talking to a friend of jose + one of the other guys in the boat, and he was talking to the other boat guy via text all the way up til like ~12-1am the night that the shit went down. dude was saying that the mutual friend was all kinds of earpy about going out in the boat that late at night, but jose [fernandez] was insistent on the "night ride" because he was "distraught" about something.

i reckon it'd be "in bad taste" to start pressing/digging about this sort of thing, but i genuinely wonder what jose was "distraught" about to the extent that he demanded going out on a night cruise. off the top of my head i'd guess that his recently instagramming a pic of his very-pregnant GF = perhaps she was a bit more maternal and a lot less "hot piece of ass" and then since jose is some kind of a star pitcher (let alone the whole "cuban" angle where he's likely some kind of a god to the cuban population down in south florida) he's got all kinds of options.... and being "young dumb and full of cum" i'd reckon that maybe having a very pregnant GF who quite possibly wasn't down to fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck = jose had "needs" that weren't getting serviced and maybe he got caught with his wang in the "Fred Durst brand Cookie Jar" and that caused some kind of a big argument between him and the girlfriend and thus he wanted to get a few in him and out there on the water to try and clear his mind? AGAIN: THIS IS 100% CONJECTURE (MOST LIKELY IN BAD TASTE) HOWEVER IT'S SOMETHING THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE TO ME.

lamentably, we'll never know because this kind of thing will be even more inherently private in the wake of a very private death.... but still you wonder how much this has gotta fuck with mattingly+pitching-coach who decided to push him back from a sunday start to monday (allowing him to double-dip on monday and then the final saturday/sunday of the season. some people speculated that pushing him back from starting against the braves on sunday to starting against the mets on monday was just a middle-finger-response to the mets trying to make the playoffs? *shrug*) cuz man oh man... i dont think it's ever really sunk into me (a guy who has proudly had jose fernandez on all of his "proper" fantasy teams since the day he threw his first pitch in MLB) that jose fernandez is dead. you know what i'm saying?
