That's the weird thing. In Canada, everyone cares about the Maple Leafs one way or the other. In America, most of our dumb motherfuckers couldn't point to Toronto on a map.

Yeah, but those same dumb motherfuckers couldn't point out Chicago on a map of Illinois.

Not right now, of course.

And I'm not pissing on their parade. This is my 52nd summer and some team besides the White Sox has won the World Series in 51 of them. This is just another one of those teams. But in a way I think baseball lost something last night. And I think Cub fans did too, no matter how good winning feels.

Absolutely, and the comparison to Red Sox fans is completely valid. Like Cub fans, Red Sox fans once embraced a kind of warped, inverted narcissism by reveling in their tradition of futility. Shortly after winning the 2004 series, though, they were forced to create a new mythology for themselves--which they attempted to do by making claims about the unique and historic nature of their victory. Additional championships helped feed the notion that they occupied the same plane as the Yankees, but this narrative is difficult to maintain--even for fans as vacuously egocentric as Red Sox Nation. Interestingly, fanaticism among Red Sox followers has palpably declined in the past few years, a phenomenon I attribute to the fan base's conscious or unconscious realization that the Sox are now just another team.

I think I posted something similar in the Giants/Cubs series thread, but this Cubs team is definitely set up to be a villainous organization for the next bunch of years.

Baez, Contreras, Schwarber are all just cocky SOBs, guys that are easy to hate if they aren't on your team. (And a little easy to hate even if they are.) Some other guys also, Rizzo, Strop.

Barring some unforeseen injuries or drop in play, the team should be good for an extended period. Also the organization has the resources to spend money on FAs. Any Cubs fan that doesn't expect there to be some disdain for the Cubs over the next bunch of years is just kidding themselves.

Although I will say, this whole narrative of the Cubs fans losing a piece if themselves is just bullshit. We didn't follow the team for year because we liked losing or being identified with losing, we followed them because we wanted a winner.

Are you sure about that? Why do you think there are so many Cub fans? Because this noble franchise just happens to attract more people than any other with its greatness?

You're trying to have it both ways now- you're the little team that could, breaking curses, and suffering through the ages, winning this one for grandma all while talking out of the other side of your mouth about how strong powerful and great for years to come the Cubs will be. Talk about privilege!

Why do I think there are so many Cubs fans? Obviously because of WGN, it created a national fan base. The Cubs fan demographic will change, and probably has changed because of national TV coupled with not being on WGN.

Nobody ever said this was the little team that could. This is a great baseball team, built to contend for many seasons. This team that won didn't suffer through the ages. The teams that suffered through the ages were the teams of Mike Harkey, and Jose Cardinal, and a bunch of other shitty teams with bad players. This is a good powerful team, and will be for a while.

Are the Cubs fans privileged to be blessed with the current team? Sure, but it wasn't a privilege to root for Mike Brumley and Jeff Pico, I can promise you that.

Frank, I think you need a break for today.

And since you appear to be a bit obsessed with me today, maybe you should take my advice.

Pitchers and catchers report in a few months it will be all roses then.

He's not wrong about anything. That's the beauty of the Deadspin Guide To Writing: tell fans they're dumb for caring about/believing in something, immediately say "And that's fine!" and then race to the comments section in high dudgeon when people call you a troll. It's a wonder Burneko hasn't racked up 10,000 posts at this place.

You certainly seem to be expressing a preference for one of them. That's fine, but I wouldn't call it agnostic.

It's certainly not based upon any success or lack thereof on a baseball field. Sure, it's media driven in part, but why is that? Why does the media choose to romanticize one team while dismissing another?

I think it was. When the Cubs suck, they get the lovable/chic/trendy/neighborhood tag attached to them. The journalists who cover them are both journalists and fans, and they have no problem expressing this.

Yes, perfect.

You'd think they'd go easy on the Cubs, being obsessed with the St. Louis Cardinals as they are, but I forgot that everything sucks except NBA gifs.

The Cubs fans are privileged with this team because they got to root for and be part of a WS title. Same reason why the Royals fans were privileged with last year's team, the Sox fans with 2005, the Tigers in '84, etc. There are only so many titles to go around so it's a privilege for a fan base to be a part of it. That's my point.

I've you have a problem with the media coverage of the teams, I can't help you there. Start writing for the Trib I guess.

Sorry for your loss Jorr. You were a dick-smoker the last few years saying all the prospects would fail...You thought you were some great baseball guy by simply saying The Cubs would not win....ever...something would always happen to the Cubs...Cubbie occurrence....and then I asked you directly last year if the Cubs were not going to win it...who was? and your pussy answer was "not the Cubs". Gee..how easy was that? Now a big FU to you...they fucking won it. Try and spin your BS about special...no longer special...whatever the fuck you want to say....you've been off target for three years and counting. Eat your fucking words!

Go Cubs!

Jorr has been consistently wrong about the Cubs. He said they would not make the playoffs last year, said they would not win their division, nor top the 97 wins they had last year and said they would not win a World Series either. I was on the other side of all those things and correct each time. Jorr is really not the baseball savant that he would like people to think he is and let's his Sox fandom and disdain for the Cubs to affect his judgement all too often. Cubs 2016!

Hey remember that time you said the Sox would be over .500 this year, and then claimed you were right about that prediction?

Maybe JORR should just declare himself right too!
