I think there's a solid chance that they can get a decent #5 starter to compete with Montgomery a one-year FA deal. So Id rather see them send Jason to an AL team needing an innings eater for three months and then flip in July. Win-win, Cubs get a AA pitcher and get out of the salary, bad team eats innings to help deal with innings caps on young starters, and gets something about the same back.

I believe they will give Montgomery every chance to win a spot in the rotation in spring training. If everyone stays healthy and Montgomery wins the spot, they probably trade Hammel in spring, but not before making sure the staff is healthy and they don't need him. He did win 15 games and pitched a lot of innings, so he should not be undervalued. Especially when there is very little pitching that will be available in free agency this year.

Hammel is a FA after the season, expert.

They aren't going to use a team option just to trade him.

They will absolutely use the team option. With the lack of pitching available, there is no question about it.

They will only use the option on him if they plan on having him in the rotation for the season, unless performance dictates otherwise.

WRONG!!! They will use the option because he won 15 games and represents a great option as a 5th starter. In the event Montgomery wins the 5th spot, he could be used in a trade. It's a win/win scenario for the Cubs.

WRONG MOVE!!! The Cubs needed to keep a proven 15 game winner with good character like Hammel. You can get rid of guys like Chapman, Carl Edwards Jr., or even Jason Heyward if you're willing to eat some of the money! To offset some of that money, I would personally let Dexter Fowler leave for a multi-year deal somewhere else so we can get Schwarber in the outfield regularly. It's always been pretty obvious that Schwarber was in the Cubs' long-term plans but guys like Fowler were not, so I say let 'em go and let's keep building this team up the RIGHT way!

Good character? Hammel didn't seem to be a team guy whenever Maddon had to remove him in the fourth inning.

Why would you need to move CJ? Why would that involve eating money?

Chapman isn't on the books.

Do you even baseball?

Edwards makes the league minimum (505k) he's a steal, like Addy and a half dozen other guys.. Edwards was grabbed in the 38th round, that's when Reinsdorph drafts his neuces n nephews.
