Of course, the CPD is already notorious for fudging its numbers -- the FBI doesn't count them because the methodology is so wacked. What do you expect?

The 5 million number is now becoming fact even though it defies logic. It got me to thinking, who benefits the most from fudging a number so that it looks like an historical amount of people from around the world gathered peacefully in Chicago? Who benefits the most from providing circuses so that it appears that Chicago has united? Who benefits the most from pacifying residents? That is the same person who declared 5 million would show before 5 million showed and what do you know: 5 million people showed. I wonder how that person knew in advance? I wonder when that person will be announcing his run for re election.

As long as it's more than the 2005 Sox charade...I mean parade.

You know what else defies logic?

The Cubs NLDS Game 4 rally, the Cubs coming back from down 2-1 in the NLCS and the Cubs coming back from down 3-1 in the World Series to win their first championship since 1908.

5 million people celebrated it.

So should most of the attendees.

Oh, ok. I thought we were all in agreement that it wasn't five million. I guess if you don't yet know you are being duped then you can't proceed to the question of who is doing it and for what reason.

I'm sorry you can't recognize 5 million people going out to celebrate something that hadn't been done in quite awhile. You may not realize this...but the Chicago Cubs are sort of popular.

Yeah, I'm sure the Cubs doubled the most attended Yankees parade on record.

There were not 5 million people there. The Chicago metro area is 10 million people. To assume half the population showed up is laughable.

You know no one that flew in for the parade as they moved out of the area? I know several people that did this. And I don't even hang out with 1%'ers.

I'm willing to concede 4.5M. But no lower. Downtown Chicago was PACKED. Wrigley was PACKED.

No, I don't anyone who flew in for the parade. And since we are using anecdotal evidence, far less than half of the people I know went to the parade. Even if a million people flew/drove in from out of the Chicago area (very doubtful) that leaves 40% of the population that attended. it's not possible. It doesn't diminish the championship to say that 2.5-3 million people attended a parade.

It was nowhere close to 5 million. It's ridiculous.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/ba ... story.html

While there was no shortage of fans who came out to cheer the Chicago Cubs as they took a victory lap during the World Series championship downtown parade Friday, experts caution the crowd numbers may not be as robust as city officials have claimed.

By Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communication's count, an estimated 5 million people lined the 6-mile parade route and gathered at the rally in Grant Park. But — like other official crowd counts — there's reason to be skeptical, experts say.

"The guesstimates are almost always vast exaggerations," said Clark McPhail, a sociology professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Politics often play a factor in overblown crowd counts. Runaway enthusiasm also could pump up the final tally, McPhail said.

There is a science to calculating crowds. The most common method is to draw a grid and make an estimate based on the average number of people that would fit into each section.

Another way to gauge crowds, particularly in a city such as Chicago, would be to analyze the capacity of buses or trains to deliver millions of people downtown or along the parade route, according to Steve Doig, the Knight Chair in Journalism at Arizona State University.

Doig too was skeptical of the city's tally, which was nearly twice the city's entire population.

"I'm sure it was a great crowd of very happy fans," Doig wrote in an email, "just not millions of them."

The "count" was equally as ridiculous as the numbers for the Cavaliers and Royals that were in excess of the metro populations of those cities. Fwiw, I only know three people who actually bothered to show up for that circle jerk.
