It seems like "more people should vote" is a pretty universally held opinion. I disagree. It's like owning a gun or deciding to have kids. Everyone should have a right to do it, and I hope MANY don't exercise that right.

100% with you. To have a high voter turnout for the sake of turnout does nothing for the country. Why would I want idiots randomly voting for people based on TV ads or who their favorite celebrity tweeted about? What people really should want is educated voters turning out to vote.

To some degree, you need a percentage of eligible voters to vote just to lend legitimacy to the whole affair -- if we elected the president based on 2.5 million total votes, you could have an uprising saying that was unfair (even though it was really completely fair.)
