he'll be castrated like most presidents are. during the campaign, the hopefuls always have a big mouth and are full of promises.

people seem to forget how hopeless the 2000 election was. at least we won't have to suffer through a shitty recount this time.

we can't get much worse as a country than we are now; and if 8 years of W led us to Obama, maybe this could lead us to the better half in 2020.

Gore, Kerry, Hillary. Really what a load of shit they have put up against Republicans. They better come up with somebody a lot better in 2020.

The people who decided this election hated both Democrats and Republicans. We have a president elect who isn't a Republican nor a Democrat. Again in hindsight, this was the year of the outsider. Clinton supporters would have absolutely voted for Sanders in a general election against Trump. And Clinton haters on the fence about Trump could have plausibly voted for Sanders given his stances on trade.

No. IMO, the Democrats picked Hilary for 2 reason: She was mainstream and being the 1st woman President.
Hillary was a better choice than Bernie. Bernie's policies would have gotten destroyed in a general election. Hillary pretty much ignored going after all of the "government handouts" and "huge new taxes".

The fact is that we needed Obama 2.0 who wasn't so disliked. That man was Joe Biden.

Bernie was/is for the working class, Hilary was not, and Trump made the middle class believe he was.

Bernie was a non-starter because his whole campaign would have been portrayed as "government handouts" and "huge tax increases".

Trump would have matched Bernie on trade.

Charles Krauthammer mentioned last night that the real story here is being missed. The U.S. no longer has a conservative party. The GOP is now a populist party. Trump is not a conservative by any means. In his victory speech he almost sounded like he was going to restart the WPA.

As a middle class citizen, the college tuition issue was big for me. I have 2 little ones, and at this moment college is almost not worth the loans you have to take out vs what you are going to make.

One quibble I have with that is I wouldn't limit populism to the GOP. If the Democrats produced a populist candidate then defacto independents (I.e. frustrated Republicans or Democrats) would have also voted for that person.

The problem is that his plan either:
1) Devalues college to the point where it is simply 4 more years of high school and it requires even more study after that.
2) Requires entrance exams and limited enrollment like many of the "free college" countries do.

He would have been hammered on that and he would have no real answer.

Let me give you an example:

My wifes cousin is about to go to college in Boston. The degree plus room and board is almost $70k per year x 4 yrs = $280k for a fucking Bachelors degree! And you are worried about devaluing college! Comeon

Again, we just had a candidate with no real answer to anything win it all. This wasn't a year for arcane policy discussions. It was about perceptions and messaging.

Why go there then?

Rolls Royce are expensive cars. You don't have to buy one though.

It is not about why go there, that is an example of what is there. Not Harvard or Yale or Notre Dame. College is fucking expensive. There is a reason Millennials are living at home longer. Even at $20k a year, that is $80K right out of college. That is like a mortgage payment.

$80k is a choice.

$20k is more normal. That is expensive.

However, "free college" just pushes everyone to advanced degrees which then cost money and you have 4 years less of earning years while you also still have to pay for other expenses.

The financial aid system needs reform. It pumps up the cost of college with no real value added.

Rick, the election of Trump shows this wasn't anything about policy. Trump channeled the feelings of a lot of people. They were going to vote for him no matter what he said or did.

$20k a year is still ridiculous. The goal should be to be more educated at a country. Not for the rich or upper middle class.

Like I said, it is not about that. I am not claiming the top most expensive colleges are the normal. I am saying the cost for college for an 18yr to start and 21-22yr old to come out with a mortgage payment with the possibility of not having a high paying job to move out, is crazy.

It is not Boston College either.

As a liberal (Hi, denis), I can't argue this.

Yes. This is the story. They better look inward.

Couldn't be put more simply or truthfully.
Gore, Kerry, Hillary. Really what a load of shit they have put up against Republicans. They better come up with somebody a lot better in 2020.

He is in California right now, his name is Gavin.

Let's hope that a real progressive is the candidate in 2020. Not another fake progressive like Obama or Hillary.

Bernie was/is for the working class, Hilary was not, and Trump made the middle class believe he was.
Bernie was for the poor. Almost all of his policies helped them much more than they helped the middle class.

As a middle class citizen, the college tuition issue was big for me. I have 2 little ones, and at this moment college is almost not worth the loans you have to take out vs what you are going to make.

Comeon

She should go to a cheaper college.

Bernstein vibe.
