Nearly 600,000 people and counting have signed a petition calling on members of the Electoral College to vote for Hillary Clinton when they meet in December.


Petitioners argued that because Clinton is most likely to win the popular vote, electors should support her over Donald Trump when they meet Dec. 19.
While Clinton currently leads in the popular vote by about 300,000 votes, according to the AP, Trump earned the required 270 electoral votes to become president.

"Secretary Clinton WON THE POPULAR VOTE and should be President," the petition reads.

"We are calling on the Electors to ignore their states' votes and cast their ballots for Secretary Clinton. Why? Mr. Trump is unfit to serve. His scapegoating of so many Americans, and his impulsivity, bullying, lying, admitted history of sexual assault, and utter lack of experience make him a danger to the Republic."

The 538 electors will meet in December to officially cast their votes for the presidential election, but traditionally, electors vote along the lines of the states they represent.

So called "faithless electors" can buck tradition and support the candidate who lost their state, but only 157 have done so in the 240 year history of the U.S., according to the nonprofit FairVote.

And nearly half of the electors who changed their votes did so because the candidate they were pledged to support died before the Electoral College met. Another 82 broke their pledge for reasons of personal preference.

So candidate X and his cohorts sit down and looking at which, oh I don't know, 12 states (or however many) they need to go to with a crazy campaign promise of reducing those folks' federal income tax to zero and raising it on everyone else to compensate if only they will give him their millions upon millions of votes ... isn't that sorta kinda the crazy shit the electoral college prevents (either by design or simply by consequence of its existence)?

The example isn't necessarily meant to be viewed realistically, but the sentiment behind it is (e.g., let's get CA, IL, OH, FL, NY, PA TX, and whoever the hell else to vote us in by catering solely to their interests at the express expense of the remaining 'irrelevant' states).

I like the sound of one person, one vote and all ... I think I posted on it yesterday in some thread more or less in favor of the sweeping movement (which apparently included IL) ... it's just that, as with most things, there almost certainly have to be some sort of set of unforeseen/unintended consequences to making that huge of a transition.

When I am stuck and need to figure something out I always remember the Immortal words of Socrates when he said:"I just drank what?"

So which is it? The electors should change their vote because Hillary won the popular vote or because Trump is unfit? It's one thing to argue the former (though changing the rules could only happen prior to an election, not after), but the latter is just an embarrassing lament of losers.

The thing is, your example could be achieved right now using that same strategy under the electoral college...cherry pick the most populous states and come up with some magic bullet that gets them to vote for you.

It's interesting that you almost never hear this complaint with respect to each state getting two senators irrespective of population, even though it's basically the same argument with the same advantages and drawbacks.

One argument in favor of the electoral college that I had not considered (until I heard it made yesterday) was that having a nationwide recount would be a logistical disaster.
