School cancels classes after reports of planned protest near campus

With reports of a Black Lives Matter protest to occur at the school that day, Marist High School announced no classes would take place on Friday, Nov. 11.

The news comes in the wake of a student at the school using a racial slur against African-Americans in a text message, which was then posted on social media, that came after a police-involved shooting in Mt. Greenwood that left a black man dead.

A screenshot obtained by The Beverly Review shows someone stating hatred for blacks and using the N-word and an four-letter expletive.

Marist officials said that they learned of the social-media post on Nov. 6, one day after Joshua Beal, 25, of Indianapolis, was killed during an altercation on the 3100 block of West 111th Street. According to police, after a road-rage incident, an off-duty sergeant saw Beal display a gun; shots were fired, police said, and Beal was fatally struck.

Video provided by a witness appears to show Beal pointing a weapon. His family said he was licensed to carry a gun “wherever he goes,” and said he told police he had a permit.

Several protests have taken place since, and Marist officials decided to cancel school after reports of one being planned to take place near the campus.

“We came to this decision after communicating with the Chicago Police Department, [19th Ward Ald. Matt O’Shea] and others, and assessing the situation internally,” a school official said in an email. “While safety is a concern, we also aim to limit disruptions to the learning process, which is vital to our students’ success.”

The school also said in a statement on its website that it was addressing the social-media post.

“The language and spirit of the post contradict the Marist mission, and we are devastated by this incident. We are, therefore, working through this issue on the disciplinary side while making efforts to respond to the needs of all of our students,” the statement said.

“Marist is a family, and like any family, we are facing a challenging situation. We are confident that by acting on our core Christian values we can ensure that Marist continues to grow more fully into a community that welcomes and supports all.”

Regarding discipline for the student who made the comment, a school official said in an email that Marist “does not publicly comment on student records.

“Disciplinary decisions are complex, include many factors,” the official said, “and receive diligent evaluation and discernment.
