Fixed that for you. Keep up.

The People Who Count Have Incentive to Embellish

Virtually every academic who studies crowd sizes emphasizes that the people counting often have ulterior motives for their numbers. Here are three separate experts:

• Arizona State professor Steve Doig: “In reality, estimating the size of crowds at mass public events is much more about public relations than a quest for truth.”

• NYU professor Charles Seife: “Almost everyone who has tried to make a crowd estimate has a vested interest in what the outcome of the estimate is. … Whenever you see a crowd estimate, you have to wonder where it’s coming from.”

• University of Chicago professor Stephen Stiegler: “Most people look at a crowd like that, and they say, ‘Boy, there are a lot of people there.’ Most people have no incentive to underestimate. If you’re in the business of crowd control, you want to brag about how much you’ve controlled. If you’re in the business of puffing up the Blackhawks, which don’t need any — they’re so great this year — then you aim for a big number.”

Large crowd sizes can boost civic pride, providing evidence to citizens that they’re the most passionate and best fans in the world. And there’s also the hope that it will instill confidence in a local government, who somehow put together a massive event with few hitches.

Quote:
For 5 million people to have attended the Cubs parade, almost the whole city would’ve had to go, plus an additional several million people from outside of city limits. But we also know that millions of Chicagoland residents were either unable to go to the parade, chose not to go to the parade, or just straight up don’t care about the Cubs.

I don’t know how many people were at the parade. Considering the popularity of the Cubs, the length of the parade route, the mass of humanity in Grant Park, and the likely overestimates by every other parade, I wouldn’t be surprised if last week’s parade was the biggest sports celebration of all time.

Except, saying 5 million people went is like saying Chicago had been waiting since 1743 for a Cubs title. You don’t need to exaggerate when the truth is as incredible as the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series.

Sox fans aren't the sad ones. Cubs fans like IMU who are afraid of math are.

The Chicago Cubs united a city...an entire metropolitan area. A sports team was responsible for one of the largest celebrations in the world.

2016.

Yup. It's a shame to see a baseball fan fight against math.

2016 is a lot closer to correct than 5 million.

For IMU to be so in favor of WAR and other sabremetrics, its puzzling that he chooses to ignore simple math when it comes to this.

The parade route was approximately 4 miles long, if you exclude the portions where the parade was cruising by at non-parade speeds. Where Furious, Dennis and I were the crowd was easily 25 or 30 rows deep on our side of the street, packed shoulder to shoulder. The other side of the street had at least 15 rows of people. There were people above us in goddamn trees. If this was the density of the fans for most of those four miles, you have a "fuckton" of people. This excludes the ~150,000 people at Lower Hutchinson Field and the hundreds of thousands of people around Wrigley Field that weren't along Addison.

I'm sorry if I'm not dying to accept a few White Sox fans crying shenanigans at 5 million people when 1.75 million people at the 2005 parade was never questioned once.

Chicago may have reasons to overstate the parade crowd. White Sox fans definitely have a reason to understate it.

(I didn't even bring up the fans not located on the unofficial legs of the parade. According to the TV broadcast of the parade, there are MANY)

That's because 5 million makes no sense. 1.75 million is plausible. If the Cubs said 2 or 3 million people wouldn't question it.

Well, I don't think anyone is really to worried with you or a few other Sox fans questioning it.

The recorded number is 5 million. And so 5 million will be the official number, just as 1.75 million was the number for the White Sox parade.

Until you counted for yourself, you really can't be more sure it wasn't 5 million than I am sure it was 5 million. We both have no proof.

The 5 million is certainly incorrect. The 1.75 million number is more than likely incorrect.

You ignored the math. The Metra number is telling. Ignore it If you want.

Stop using the stupid jealous sox fan thing. I already debunked it. 5 million is such a ridiculous number The Ringer wrote a whole article about how dumb it was and backed it with three professors describing the way you are letting your fandom dictate your beliefs on this perfectly. It's fine to just admit it was a ridiculous number, which you were seemingly inclined to do with your earlier post, and move on. But if you want to keep arguing it was 5 million, go ahead. It is amusing.

Cubs fans roll deep.

I'm not sure why the Metra number would be so telling. Hey guess what?! Public transportation, especially the Metra, isn't the end all be all. I've only taken the Metra downtown once in my entire life.

It is. The population of Chicago did not increase by 250% the day of the parade. Not even close.
