looking at this picture and seeing 4 heavily armed soldiers casually walking/hanging around reminds me of the !!! of when i first went out to NYC circa feb-march 2007 and you'd be putzing around doing [whatever] in penn station and notice a full-army-fatigues soldier with some kind of !!! heavy/weapons just casually walking/hanging around like "i ain't in kansas anymore, toto!"
indeed, i remember two distinct observations about NYC re: the inevitable juxtapose of THE GREATEST CITY IN THE USA (just ask them, especially the transplants who have a good decade or 2 of living there under their belt) ---
1) it was like everybody was wearing their "sunday shoes" every day of the week, aka #DressToImpress aka "it's a vanity affair" [tho in fairness i haven't been to LA since i was ~7 years old or something] -- i just couldn't help but be amazed by being able to stop at a street corner in mid-town/lower manahttan and just peoplewatch(TM) for ~5-10mins; i'd inevitably see some lady who looked like cruella deville casually walk by like "daaaaamn" aka "i ain't in kansas anymore, toto!"
2) it felt like NYC was designed to suck $$$ out of you not too different from a video game where you've got a health meter and you go into some sort of poison swamp that perpetually drains your life-bar for as long as you're in the swamp. i remember thinking "man, it prolly costs $5-10 just to hang out in manhattan and breathe the air for an hour" indeed, i wasn't in kansas anymore, toto!
and i'll always kick myself for being too chickenshit to take that picture where i was standing a little bit down the street from freedom hall (where washington was inaugerated as 1st prez), which is across the street from the NYSE. they had fully armed/armored SWAT team guys perched around there with these giant rifles with huge sights on them, and they'd be standing there looking through the sights randomly "staying vigilant" to look for trouble/some-people.
so at one point i had a photo lined up with the statue of george washington directly ahead of me, centered in in the middle of my view... but slightly off to the left you could see one of those heavily-armed soldiers with the giant rifles there looking through his sight "staying viligant" while people casually walked to-and-fro. the juxtaposition of the george washington statue and the soldier = probably still the best picture i ever woulda taken.... but for some odd reason even tho i had the picture lined up i just didn't take it... maybe i was afraid of taking it and then a few minutes later some blacked out SUV pulls up and 2-3 guys with earpieces pop out like LET ME SEE THAT CAMERA NOW!!!! ?? --- #AintThatAmerica aka this is definitely not kansas, eh toto? =P
[toto would go on to say "WHY THE FUCK DOES THIS PSYCHO KEEP ON MENTIONING ME?!" and block me on twitter =/ ]
