On 9/11, I had a noon Spanish class. Classes hadn't been cancelled but the teachers could if they wanted.

I got there and the teacher was pretty upset and said "I'm going to teach class but it's ok if you want to leave". I left but that was because I hated Spanish. I felt kind of bad about it but I also hated Spanish.

My college canceled classes on 9/11. I remember my ex-GF/GF (I can't remember if we were still together) at the time, who went to SE Missouri State, was furious that she had to go class, and I didn't. I told her to get the fuck over herself. She was a bitch.

MANY parents did just the same. Like elsewhere, it was a packed green line el train @10:30 that morning. MANY parents hit the packed liquor stores, gathered their soft kids in front of the tv and taught lessons that keep on giving.

I had that mindset a few years ago. Then it struck me that the purpose of education isn't to do well on that test they set in front of you, but to master the instruction. If you can show mastery in a week, that doesn't make you a worse student than one who masters it today. Sure there are the side issues of disciplining oneself to study, work on deadlines, handle pressure, etc. but if the goal is to understand the course work, well there are a lot of ways to skin a cat.

By the way, high school has been exceedingly more difficult. It seems like my son craved the challenge and regimen but there are kids I know who are smart who are not handling freshman year very well.

They may not be handling it well because middle school did not prepare them adequately for the work load. They aren't teaching anything about work habits, etc. by being soft and lacking rigor in middle school.

My students get offended when I ask them to revise and take the higher of the two grades. Even if they get a 90 after substantial revision, they will still grouse about the 55 on the first draft. Do you want me not to be honest? I'll ask.

Students can retake any test they take from me. The requirement is they do a retake review (which is same length as the test review) and have one of the lunch time or after school tutors sign off that they went twice for help. Maybe one or two kids actually do this per test out of 50.

I'm considered a hard-ass or (my favorite) old-school in my class policies:
Miss an exam? it's a 0. (all of my questions on my exams are application/applied questions as they show learning not memorizing)
Don't turn in an assignment or paper on time? It's a 0.
I don't take attendance, you show up or you are going to fail. Period.

This is a great reputation/way to teach class - the soft students are afraid of me so my classes tend to be filled with hardcore students who want the challenge....not surprisingly, I have a good portion of my students that get into good graduate schools.

That's pretty much how my grammar school and H.S. were (minus the non-mandatory attendance), too.

College should definitely be like that. I can't believe what students think they are entitled to get away with and I'm stunned by teachers who suggest it in the first place.

I took a history class my senior year that I never once entered the classroom and got a C in the class. I knew the teacher, I knew he never took attendance or gave tests. Grades were based on book reviews you would write. I got a copy of the syllabus, skimmed the books, wrote the reviews and turned them into his mailbox.

Now as a college student that was great. As an adult/parent I shudder at such nonsense. No way that should ever happen.

Every once in a while I had a class where someone you never saw during the entire semester showed up during the last week and asked to borrow someone's notebook (so they could make copies of it and use that to study). They were usually met with a "Get the fuck out of here." look from whoever they asked.
