I wouldn't have failed you. You would have earned an F.

I'm seeing it after college when we hire these kids in, as well.

My professors didn't care if you didn't show up.

There was in class participation that was a portion of your grade and couldn't be made up. If you never went and managed to ace every test, you'd end up with a C.

I don't think the majority of my teachers took attendance.

You weren't a fan of college.

My stepson is in junior high right now and my wife and I are frustrated about the way the kids are handled and coddled. Didn't hand in your assignment? Don't
fret, just get it to us as soon as you can for no lost credit. Oh, you didn't do well on your latest quiz/test. Not to worry, come on in and retake it when it
is convenient for you and we'll get that grade bumped right back up. We can't believe this is the way it works and don't agree with it at all. Yes, I get
the kids are only 12-13 years old but the idea of always getting a second chance for EVERYTHING is annoying and unrealistic. We are hoping that the
high school gets a bit tougher next year.

I had that mindset a few years ago. Then it struck me that the purpose of education isn't to do well on that test they set in front of you, but to master the instruction. If you can show mastery in a week, that doesn't make you a worse student than one who masters it today. Sure there are the side issues of disciplining oneself to study, work on deadlines, handle pressure, etc. but if the goal is to understand the course work, well there are a lot of ways to skin a cat.

By the way, high school has been exceedingly more difficult. It seems like my son craved the challenge and regimen but there are kids I know who are smart who are not handling freshman year very well.

I can step back and see your point. I get the feeling that the schools are allowing this so that their average grades go up ( no child left behind, is that still a thing? ). As parents we take as
much blame as anyone, as the kid is pretty lazy and never has homework at home. Has trouble handing things in, writing his name on his paper, stuff like that. His sister was a
top 10 in her class student and was self motivated so it is a polar opposite situation. The boy isn't quite as sharp as his sister, although his sister went off to college and like many
students I would guess, fell flat on her face in college but I suspect that had more to do with time management and partying. Anyway, we are doing our best to try to make him aware
that he is not going to always be able to "mail it in" and if he is interested in becoming a vet or any other position he has interest in that his work ethic and studying need to change
now before high school. We don't want him to learn this the hard way but seems like in one ear and out the other.

A friend of mine only got one grade as an undergrad that was not an A. Her dad was the chair of the Chemistry Department and she needed a science class so she thought it would be easy and fun to take her father's lowest level class, something he called "Bonehead Chemistry". She got a C and complained to her mother about it. Her mother asked why he gave their daughter a C and her dad replied, "I didn't give her a C, I just wrote it down in the book."

I heard on the news just now that students at colleges around the state (and maybe the country) are walking out of their classes today at noon to protest Donald Trump.

After nearly a weeks of this I think adults (at least chronological adults) are just rolling their eyes at this point.

I can't think of any classes I took in college where attendance was mandatory.

science labs, occasionally other classes led by grad students that know less about the subject than you.
