The other thing to keep in mind is that with some of this stuff a lot of the savings is the fact that you have a lot less channels. Cable and satellite offer smaller packages too for cheaper prices. You still need the internet and normally you get a discount for having both. Add in the hassle of live sports and you don't really get a lot of value for your savings.

Soon, the leagues will open up everything without blackouts but they are holding out as long as possible.

If you don't care about sports then you can do internet + hulu + netflix and have more content than you know what to do with and actually save money. If you care enough about cable to want something like Playstation Vue just downgrade your cable package.

This is where I am having a problem. I had Amazon prime for the free shipping, and they add the movies. I decided to get Netflix and love it. But, I just can not give up the sports, so it doesn't make sense to cut the cord.

Used their free trial to test playstation Vue during the dodger series. Plusses included the flexibility to watch anything anywhere in the house with Roku and Chromecast -- even taking the TV outside on warm nights. Minuses included no DVR (i like to record shows and some sports to watch later), occasional buffering hangups and the sports lag which meant I could not follow all the fascinating twitter and CSFMB commentary

So for me the jury is still out.

Playstation Vue has DVR. (But only saves your shows for 30 days)

Thanks for the input everyone.

If we decide to cut cable, and based on what I've heard here and from other forums, a combination of the following might be doable for me:

Chromecast
NetFlix
SlingTV (has sports, HGTV, other channels we watch)
PGA Tour Live ($40 a year gives me my golf fix)
Amazon Prime (for funsies)

Of course, the downside would be replacing 1 umbrella package (Xfinity) with 5 or more other services to basically get the same thing for less money.

I don't know if that hassle is worth it...

I wouldn't jump into everything at once. Just pick 1 of amazon, netflix or Hulu and give it a month and do it. You may find you change your viewing habits and don't need the others. Once you are sick of the one you picked, you can cancel and cycle to the next one. For the most part, content doesn't not overlap between services. There are no contracts so if you hate it, you can always go back. Plus after a month you will begin to get the very best offers from providers. All of them are terrified of losing people to streaming so you will see really good deals afterward.

Also if you are on Verizon you should know all prime time games can be streamed for free through their app on the Verizon network.

We cut the cord and we probably pay a lot of services but its still less than cable.

Netflix
Hulu
Amazon Prime-doesn't count because we bought it for shipping, we'd have it even if we had cable
Sling
HBO Now

I wish my smart TV had a Sling App on it... that would make things easier for me but right now we use the Chromecast and that works just fine.

For how expensive some of you make Comcast seem, I think you're getting ripped off.

Image

I pay $133 right now for X1 everything except Showtime, and it normally is ~$116 but in the last couple months my HD/DVR promotion expired and I have to call them to get it waived again (I avoid contracts).

If I wanted to cut cable, Comcast has a listed price of $80/mo for 75 mbps internet. I get 90 mbps internet right now...so it is the closest. Let's say I can get a promotion for $70/mo even if I don't bundle anything. Then add taxes. $75 or $80 out the door. Having Comcast cable with HBO....X1 streaming...live sports...all of that is worth $50-$60 / mo for me.

I just said this in another thread, but I'm a ticket holder in name only now. Had to sell out to a close friend during the rebuild as selling tickets wasn't covering enough of the costs. He was nice enough to let me use my ticket to go game 5 but all of the costs (and big profits this season) went directly to him. I'm only in charge of selling the tickets. I have three other partners that make the financial commitment.

Already have amazon prime for shipping, was already paying for Netflix. It came down to I found myself going to netflix first over cable TV. Once I realized weeks would go by without me even watching content from directv, it made it an easy choice.

This is the same thing with us. We were paying for everything we use now already (except for Sling) PLUS cable.

I pay $15 a month for Netflix and I don't remember the last time I watched it. I haven't canceled because I think my kids may use it and I usually forget.

can you guys not bitch them down on pricing? i looked at my dad's dish bill and mediacom bill last week and was like, WTF are you paying almost 130 bucks for? 1 5 minute phone call to each and my dad is now paying around 75 bucks for internet and dish. What i pay. i just have to make 2 five minute phonecalls every 6 months to ensure paying almost 1/2 of the regular price for this bullshit.

i would like to move to sling. the problem is mediacom caps GB. and we would surpass it with sling tv. to upgrade our GB it would put us on a higher plan that we might as well keep dish.

we also have netflix and prime. but outside of binge watching tv, both are pretty shit for movies.

It's easy for us to justify the cost. First, the kids. We don't just plop them in front of the TV 24 hours each day, but it's nice to have MANY options for them. Second, we rarely go out for dinner/drinks. You could cut one dinner/trip to the bar each month, and there is the money for the more expensive cable bill.

I cut the cord and got Playstation Vue. I'm happy with it thus far.

I think in the end all the people sticking with cable will benefit for our trendsetting ways of cutting the cord. Its been a couple years now and I'm happy with it. Once enough people do it, the cable/dish companies will finally allow the a la carte package that everyone has always wanted. I can then go back to Comcast or AT&T and pick out the 25-30 stations that I want and pay about what I'm paying now.

Sling makes sense if you really like sports. Otherwise invest in an HD antenna.

Looking to get rid of cable soon too. I got the firestick and I see no need for anything else, it has everything...live sports, tv,movies ppv. Between this and switching phone providers I will end up saving ~$250 month.

Sling TV adding CSN Chicago on April 2nd. That was the only thing in my opinion that made Directv Now better.

This is great news. Just in time for hockey playoffs, even though many of those games will be on NBCSN.

PSN Vue still does not have MLB Network, but if they do so, I may make a move.

(Or to Direct TV Now or one of the other options)

What the hell happened to this place?

We used to be about laying the pipe, not cutting the cable.

Better get it together.

We have neither cable tv nor cable internet service, house is 600+ feet off the road, installation costs would be astronomical. We use DSL from ATT, so slow speeds hamper online streaming. Kids got me the Firestick, we use that for Netflix, and I used my son's college cable account to watch ESPN app during bowl season. I hope to be able to find a way to see all the tourney games later this month. We pay $100 a month for the ATT and $10 for Netflix. All the Chicago stations are on UHF signals now, except WBBM 2, but our old antenna gets that one and all the others, plus a bunch from South Bend, so we get everything offered there. My son has set up a Plex account on our Nas, and loaded it with a terabyte of movies, IF I get through all of those, I'll start to look for new seasons of some of the series. For me, baseball is still best on the radio...
