Are you a chicken cooper? If so, how'd you do it? What's your coop set-up at home?

We are considering it to save costs, but the smell/noise factor is a big obstacle.

TEACH ME YOUR WAYS, HIPSTERS.

Does IT not pay what it used to? Eggs aren't that expensive are they?

I'd like to keep my options open.

Are you gonna butcher them? My grandma used to do that. She'd chop of their head, but the body was still animated for a few seconds after the head was detached.

There are many people who have them near my house. I assume most are Mexicans. A few are probably hippies. The noise is inconsequential. They do shit all over, but I'd say it's worth it. Three chickens will keep your family in eggs. Maybe even two.

Fresh eggs right from the source are so much different than mass-produced eggs. First of all, the U.S. has the stupid egg washing regulation which causes the eggs to require refrigeration. Once you have a real free range chicken egg, you'll never want those bullshit eggs again. And I don't mean this organic "cage-free" bullshit either. I mean real pasture hens.

I know some non-Mexican, (former) chicken owners who live in Prospect Heights. Coyote or something ate all the chickens.

Sounds like the biggest issue is with live chickens.

Brick is just trying to re-enact the joke of why the chicken crossed the road. Damned hipsters.

That's your big concern. Raccoons, coyotes, fox, maybe ever birds of prey if your yard is large enough for one to take aim.

Oh, and Frank, would raising backyard chickens make me a bad neighbor?

I've known many people who have them. As long as you keep them in a coop and generally take care of them, it's not real smelly or noisy. I'm assuming you have a decent amount of land because I wouldn't want them next to the house.

Also, make sure to keep them secured or wild animals will maul them. Maybe get a Rottweiler and a fence. Before you know it, you'll be a full-fledged Trump supporter.

You could take your fresh eggs and make omelettes for your neighbors. Frank can come over and rate the omelettes. Everybody wins.

Wish we could but apparently can't:

arlington heights code wrote:

The eggs taste 10x better, its like comparing a steak from Denny's and a steak from a steak house. Only problem is each hen gives an egg a day or every other day.

If a chicken and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how long would it take a monkey with a wooden leg to kick all the seeds out of a dill pickle?

we have game hens (fighting chickens), buff orpingtons, leghorns, and arucanas. our leghorns and game hens are our layers, and our orpingtons and arucanas lay for a year then are eaten.

They dont' stink like you'd think as long as you are fairly responsible. twice a year the coop gets a good hosedown and i layer hay all year and then replace it in the spring.

ours are free range so they eat mostly grass and bugs. i don't light them in the winter so they don't lay continuously. they stopped back in september for us and won't start until april again.

Farm fresh eggs taste better but its not like this ridiculous noticable thing. if you had one side by side, you'd notice a deeper richer yoke but otherwise its fairly similar.

we have 4 roosters but 3 are 6mo old and will be plucked and frozen in a week or so. the other rooster is a 4 yr old game cock who has champion bloodlines. he has gone toe to toe with a hawk once and came out alive.

The rooster just basically makes noises and rapes the hens. they crow in the morning but we can usually hardly hear it.

I never took you for a hillbilly. Central Indiana really wore off on you?

Unless you're raising fighting chickens. Then, ok, cool.
