It is usually the parent and not the kid. The parent doesn't think they've done enough if there aren't a thousand presents under the tree. That's why the kids expect it. I've been guilty of it.

Yeah? My kids' friends are running up crazy credit debt so that their kids can have thousands of presents, so I have to deal with, "why did Grace get an iPhone 7 and a new bike and a..." Sure you can tell them that you are saving for college and they will thank me later, but right now they just don't care. Or its just a girl thing maybe?

Fuck their parents. I understand why you feel the way that you do but you have to draw the line somewhere. Trying to be the "coolest" parent will get you in a lot of debt and our kids still won't appreciate it. I'm learning less is more.

Why do that then? My kids understand the value of a dollar. $400 = one big gift. Expect smaller rest of way.

My girls have kinda figured it out but my son thinks I print money. In the end it is up to us to set expectations. Especially when the kids don't believe in Santa Claus.

Agree 100%.

Our 13 year old daughter is using her money she has saved to buy little presents this year. Our 10 year old son is getting one gift. Granted it's a 3DS XL with 2 Pokemon games but it is technically one thing.

Set expectations at $400 and call it a day. Also no believing in Santa is a $200 deduction. Boom you are at $200. That is easy.

It's honestly so easy to enjoy Christmas. If you don't you aren't trying.

Put up lights.
Head downtown.
Drive around and look at the other lights.
Find a Christmas festival.
Watch movies.
Do family activities.

I put up way more lighting than I should. Every year I say no I am not going to do it next year but I always do. Co-workers and friends drive by and take pics and comment how much they enjoy it so every Christmas I do it again.

MANY of these can involve drinking. For Scooter, even the driving around to look at decorations does.

Or... not Catholic maybe?

Are you saying that Christmas is a Catholic holiday only?

I'm not sure your angle on this. Christmas is a government recognized holiday that by the letter is a religious holiday but by spirit is a national holiday; otherwise, marketers would have a limited demographic to sell to and that is bad for business.

What the hell are you talking about?

I think it was pretty clear there. Perhaps you need to try reading left to right like others here in America do.

No. You said that people that don't like Christmas are crazy or murderous dopes. That's a ridiculous statement. Christmas is an over-commercialized holiday. I don't fault anyone for hating it. I think spending time with the family is great and sharing gifts are also great. I just don't need two months of people shoving the holiday down my throat. And what about Jewish people that are forced to eat Chinese food for Christmas?

They are the lucky ones. I'd rather have Chinese food than any traditional Christmas-related food...but that's because we have the same stuff as Thanksgiving...and I don't like turkey in the first fucking place.

Hoffy is right about the 2 months of solid Christmas related everything. Fuck. These shitty radio stations that start playing the same terrible 12 Christmas songs on repeat would start doing it before Halloween if they could. Fucking stores with their Christmas displays starting at Labor Day. Goddamn. I like Christmas, and it's even more fun now that I have kids, but fuck this shit.

I have always liked Christmas. It's a nice distraction from winter weather.

The consumerism is insane, though. This is the first year our kid will even somewhat understand Christmas, and that should be fun, but we are already having to tell our parents they can't get her like $1,000 of stuff each. I don't want to start that precedent and make her one of these selfish little brats who gets mad when they don't get every single thing they want. Of course, they disagree with that and want to outdo everyone else in terms of money spent. That's the one part I dislike about Christmas.
