Jay makes sense as a backup for Almora, in case he should get hurt or struggle unexpectedly. Fowler is definitely gone and I'm assuming Soler as well. I will not be surprised to see both do well elsewhere and hope they do. But the Cubs are moving in other directions and it's the right thing to do.

I like it. Good all around ballplayer. I never liked facing him when he was on the cards or padres. If he shakes off some of whatever ailed him in SD he could be a very nice role player. He was pretty clutch too come playoff time for the cards IIRC.

I think he was actually hurt and bad in his last yr in St. Louis. He seemed to bounce back last year in SD by the end of the season. His fielding was supposedly poor though...idk...its not like I watched enough of the Padres to know what his defense looked like.

Was killing it beginning of last season until he was hit by pitch and broke his forearm. Missed most of the rest of the season.

Almora will probably start at AAA. Only played a half season there and can't draw a walk. Keep Szscur as 5th OF.

He will hit more than Heyward, so there is that...

Almora will start in CF. Szczur (correct spelling) will be on the roster, as Soler will be dealt. Jay is an insurance policy, in case Almora should get hurt or unexpectedly struggle.

Almora will not start in CF unless the Cubs trade Heyward or Zobrist/Schwarber gets injured. Almora is the 6th OF with the signing of Jay. I agree that Soler will probably be dealt at some point, making Almora the 5th OF. But, I do not see the Cubs wanting to play him sporadically when he need ABs he can get in AAA.

My prediction: Cubs trade Soler, start Almora at AAA and keep Szczur as the 5th OF. Starting OF will be Schwarber, Heyward, Zobrist with Jay rotating in. Almora will be first up when there is an injury.

I don't understand the default to thinking Soler will be traded.

He makes 3.6mm next year, unless you can get something of value for him, that's a cheap source of power off the bench.

Because he plays one position that is blocked by two other high paid free agent pick ups. He has more value to the Cubs in a trade than he does on the team.

He's also injury prone,butcher in the field and didn't hit a god damn thing this post season..I've seen enough.

He hots the ball hard when he squares it up, he has some value..strong arm, no room for him here.

No thank you, using him as a PH and role player at 3mm a year is worth more than that.

Right, we should probably ignore that from his age 23 to age 24 season he improved his walk rate from 8% to 11.5%, decreased his K rate from 30% to 25% and increased his slugging percentage by .040 points. We should definitely give up on dudes with raw power who show that type of improvement at the major league level at a relatively young age.

He's under a really cheap deal for the next bunch of years. Unless something nice is coming back in return, there isn't much risk in keeping him.

The Chief Justice is rather BABIP-py, but was a fan favorite (no clue about his Padre year; although it does appear he was able to hit out there) due to his "slappy" nature, his large posterior (no homo) which he has an uncanny knack for sticking out and getting plunked in. I don't have any stats to back it up, but he gets hit quite a bit for a singles/ bottom of the order type hitter.

He was a hitting machine like Zobes before he got plunked. Was doubles leader in NL at the time I believe.
