There have been many accusations of bigotry leading up to the election and they have only increased subsequent to it. This morning I was reading Neil Steinberg's column wherein he was pontificating on the supposed bigotry of others. I would point out that I have a hard time with accusations of bigotry coming from people who reside in places like Northbrook, Illinois. Now, I'm certainly not suggesting that living in such a suburb is evidence of bigotry simply in and of itself, but I do think a person who is going to fling such accusations about on such a regular basis should minimally be self-aware enough to examine exactly why he lives in a place like Northbrook. The real answer is quite likely something he does not want to confront. That answer may be hiding behind such concepts as "better schools", but what exactly does "better" mean in such a context and what exactly is it that makes them "better"?

Neil Steinberg is Bernstein with a filter. I really don't know who is the more pretentious, sanctimonious, in love with his own voice piece of shit. I doubt either is capable to withstand an honest (self)examination. Certainly each would howl as if scalded if it were presented that they and their careful use of some language makes them come across as more sophisticated Lee Atwater types.

As for Northbrook, I can only laugh, the few people I've known from there lived diametrically opposed lives there vs. their times pent in the city. Kind of like human mullets, "business in the front, party in the"...

I am certainly cognizant of a town's reputation when considering where to live. When we chose West Dundee, we knew it was in a poor school system, District 300, but the town otherwise had a sound reputation. I think many people move to a certain town with an eye toward real estate values and property taxes. Good schools and the town's reputation are a big part of that. In my area, Carpentersville abuts West Dundee, and the housing on that border is identical. But people know Carp from driving along route 25 rather than Sleepy Hollow Rd, so the reputations are wildly divergent.

If it makes me a bigot for wanting to live in a town with a decent reputation, well then so be it. My heart says otherwise.

Seriously though, in my opinion, the only difference between the city and the suburbs in terms of "inclusion" is that most people in the suburbs live further apart regardless of race.

Well 'bigoted' and 'racist' have been reduced mostly to pejoratives angry white people use to describe other angry white people when they disagree about something. I barely know what bigotry really means anymore now that it can adequately describe from Cubs fans bragging about having none of "those people" in their ballpark to a dumb superhero movie having a white lead actor and everything in between.

I would never call you a bigot, denis. Who knows what's in another man's heart. But I think we have to recognize why homogeneous neighborhoods exist. Gated communities may be "nice" but the fact is they are trying to keep someone out. They're really just modern sundown towns. I just find it really disingenuous for a Jewish guy living in a suburb where the only black people play for the Bulls or the Bears (besides Chief Keef ) and married to a woman from the exact same background as his own to be scolding others on their bigotry.
