I am not being a Sox fan with this comment in any way nor am I trying to insult the Cubs by mentioning Soldier Field. With all of the work they have done and will do shouldn't they have taken some time off gutted the place entirely except exterior walls? Like the precious columnae (sp?) and put a new place within?

In 2015, I thought they should have moved an early home series (Omaha? Des Moines?) and backloaded the home schedule so they could work through April, but if you can get the work done without taking an entire season away, why not? Don't do as the Bears did; the season in Champaign was terrible.

I agree I think the missed season would suck. I was strictly theorizing about cost and engineering basically new rather than rebuilding on such an old frame piecemeal. I have to guess they will spend 1.5 times what a clean start new place would be.

It's been fun to watch the remodeling going on for these years now, I haven't been there in person, but the Big Fan updates were pretty cool...

I still think the field itself is the biggest waste of space- they should have dug it out three stories deep like the Grant Park Underground parking, had all the team parking there, offices, super clubhouses, etc, and just maintained the grass field on the "roof". Probably unfeasible without missing at least a season, though.

I thought somehow or another they were going to be under the bleachers ... not that you could see into from the crowd or anything.

Maybe on the rooftops and they'll build a gigantic Bernie Brewer type slide for them.

Under the Left and Right field bleachers. I am guessing that they will have cameras installed, so managers can monitor their pitchers better than just by telephone with the bullpen coach. Those seats where the bullpen used to be will be sweet.

Is there going to be any foul ground left when they finish this?

When I go to other ballparks, it amazes me how much more foul ground most parks have. I find myself thinking about how many more seats they could have sold if they turned some of the foul territory into extra seating. Then I remind myself that they might just have that many more empty seats in some of the towns (hell, on the South side here too) where they don't draw like the Cubs.

Even when I was a kid Wrigley didn't have much foul territory relative to other parks. That certainly helps the batting averages. Eventually the fans might be able to touch the baserunners. It's pretty hard to advance on a pass ball in that park.

I know, Fenway never had more than two slivers, either. Comes with the (ugh) territory in old parks.

I like the variety. I wouldn't want every game to be at the Oakland Coliseum but I thought it was cool to have a park that devours pop fouls the way that one does. And then there was the old Yankee Stadium backstop that was like half a mile back of home plate. But parks like Dodger Stadium chipping away at their foul ground for more one-percenter seats kind of ruins how Dodger Stadium is supposed to play.

Monetize. Foul. Territory.

They are actually going to have tin cans on a string.

Wrigley Aerials is a cool twitter follow for those looking for construction updates https://twitter.com/WrigleyAerials. Here are some of their pictures.
