I never made an assertion about the disservice of a catholic education. i never thought you'd be one to believe something without proof.

He said it was his opinion. There's no way to quantify such a thing, so that's really all we can go based on.

It is my opinion and I can base it around strong logic. You asked me to show it in a way I don't know how to statistically. If you claim it is easy then you go ahead and do it and prove me wrong.

Imagine if there was a school where every single child spent one hour a day reading and discussing "The Grapes of Wrath" and another school where that hour was spent on science and math. I would believe that the school that did the science and math was better allocating learning time. You could ask me to prove it but I think there are too many factors to simply break it down even though the answer is obvious that reading and discussing "The Grapes Of Wrath" is not the right answer.

There is value in it. I'm not sure there is value in it where spending as much time on math or science as you do religion makes sense.
There was a lot of math in Genesis.

you know what's funny? this is pretty much what i end up telling people when i make the mistake of admitting that i can (freestyle) rap; of course your quote is translated into "anal-retentive grown up" as opposed to whatever you wanna call my BS ("wrongspeak" ?? =)

actually I don't find it obvious at all. A kid that did nothing but read great literature would be FAR more educated than one who did math and science all day. Not to mention happier and a better citizen.

There was a lot of math in Genesis.

I remember it being letters, like Abacab.

Give me the math and science focus. Most employers don't care about your Melville and Hawthorne knowledge in an interview. Great literature is fine, but spending lots of time on it is best done as leisure activity.

One book. Not literature.

you are so incoherent I can't follow. You think catholic education relates to one book? try thousands of books covering history, philosophy, languages, political science, etc etc.

Anyone who wouldn't trade their time wasted reading Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales for time spent learning how to code CSS, C#, or Python should probably be launched by a trebuchet into an active tire fire.

Also, Google spellcheck didn't recognize or know what the word 'trebuchet' was, and I can't decide which side of this argument to blame that on.

No, but they care enough enough to make sure their kids are studying them while your kid is in trade school.

You should waste your time reading Hemingway so that I don't have to parse this purple prose.

Some minds benefit from a hammer to the back of the head too.

I'm just mostly derailing an idiot discussion for my own amusement.

Frankly, in a more sane version of my reply, I said essentially that which you did ... that there's gotta be a balance that is then, ideally anyway, individually tailored to the student to both accentuate their talents and abilities in certain areas and concurrently compensate for lack of same in other areas.

I changed the entire focus of the thread.

There are state mandates for amount of time spent on subject matters. Archdiocese schools have a longer school day and more days in school. Everyone happy?

The Grapes of Wrath is terrific but East of Eden is my favorite Steinbeck. I bought it used for 25 cents at the Gurnee library but lost it at an airport. I miss it.

I was perfectly clear. I never said it was only about one book. However, one period is dedicated to the study of one book.

Yeah, I was thinking...I like Math and Physics and have always done well in those areas. I don't freaking understand Chemistry, and I don't think hours spent trying to learn it wouldn't be a benefit. People are suited for different jobs having them learn something they can't do is a waste of time and energy.

Hatchetman seems to have done a good job in distracting from the idea that it isn't about reading. Literature is a great subject in school. My hypothetical is if you read and discussed one specific book for an hour a day for every day for your entire school life.
