well, here are some of the subjects that are covered in the study of theology this semester at Catholic University. gives you an idea of the kinds of things studied in theology.

grapes of wrath is where i drew the line for summer reading assignments. going into 8th grade i showed up with no paper for grapes of wrath and my teacher was like "but you'll only be able to get a B in my class if you don't turn in your grapes of wrath paper!" i let her know that this was an acceptable tradeoff and i proudly got my B that semester =D

Ok. Your turn now. What is the value of spending an hour every day for your entire K through 12 life learning these things which you probably learn on Sunday mornings anyways?

call me old fashioned, but i think there's a lot of obnoxious kids/millennials nowadays who could have used a proper "Introduction to the Old Testament" if you catch my drift.

Well, if you don't cover many of those same things in Mass then that sounds like a waste of time instead. You really aren't getting your moneys worth if "Faith Seeking Understanding" isn't covered at any point. I'm also sure the gospels are never mentioned either!

In mass you sit and listen and enjoy the homily and Eucharist. sing a bit. pray. chit chat with the parishioners after.

in a class, you read, write, develop arguments, give presentations, create poetry, debate, create art, etc etc.

That's all happy horseshit from the post-Vatican II era. I just pray the rosary and refuse to offer the sign of peace.

So unless you go to a Catholic school and spend an hour a day on it every day you are pretty clueless I guess! You wouldn't even know about the Gospels!

Thanks for the answer.

The type education Hatchetman is talking about is vital for the concept of ethics and morals. No, you don't need to be religious to be concerned with ethics and morals - much of that kind of discourse is secular in nature, especially now. But what it does have in common with religious discourse is its lack of a direct connection to "skills-based" subjects. Sure, you need skills to make a living, but then again what separates humans from animals, besides intelligence, are morals and ethics. This is why it's galling to hear someone like denisdman imply that he'd prefer to have someone like Martin Shkreli in a position of power as opposed to someone more known for intelligence and philosophical wisdom (the system of government we have owes its genius to philosophy, not to the geniuses who created Black Friday).

Anyway I see the debate between BR and Hatchet reflecting this tension between the components of a true "education." You've got to have both, in my view, though in the end I'd wager that the destitute philosopher/ethicist is less likely to fuck me over.

Additionally, a literary/philosophical education encourages critical thinking and the ability to question.

Lol, yeah sure I want Shkreli in charge.

If we're talking about training people for today's workplace, STEM majors are more likely to yield the skills needed by employers. I love the people spending $40,000 a year on history degrees and the like and then find out there only paths are teaching and law school. Then they learn what first year teachers make, end up in law school, rack up another $100k in debt, and finally realize the U.S. has too many lawyers.

Nothing wrong with studying those liberal arts subjects. But if you're trying to train the university masses for a career path, you're much better off in STEM subjects.

I'm on my phone so I won't explain too much but I think those have value. That isn't the same as an hour of the day every day on The Bible.

I went to catholic school 7-12. I never spent an hour every day on the Bible.

My kids have always had a full class each day of religion first at the Lutheran elementary school and now in a Christian high school. I lean with Rick on this as it seems like overkill and not particularly practical. But the quality of the balance of the education is way above what D300 offers.

So I guess Catholic school has pretty much nothing to do with religion! I'm learning new things all the time.

There certainly were religious "classes" not an hour of bible brainwashing as you imply. Anyway as usual the only bigotry in this thread is anti catholic. Same old same old.

I'm Catholic. In theory at least.

I'm not saying it's brain washing. My guy Denis laid out another way of saying my point.

In grade school we learned about sacraments, doctrines, dogmas, rituals, saints, holy days, simple analysis of the bible, and stuff like that. HS was more theology, history, world religions, etc.
