Anecdotally, I went in for a roundtable with some of the faculty and one of the people said she could tell my son came from catholic school because he had a developed moral compass and was respectful.

Mine got that from football but that is a thread for Monday's clicks.

Sports and Catholic school is the only place kids can learn responisibility and respect.

It might get 20 pages.

Don't forget to start it on Monday.

Football, not sports. Nobody learns shit from playing a pussy sport like baseball.

I didn't mean it to exclude other sports. Unfortunately, my kid hated baseball and never wanted to try to learn it.

Your kid is brilliant and has an incredibly bright future.

My wife lived in a crappy school district until high school so she went to catholic elementary and middle school. We live in one the best school districts in the area and a top 10 in the state. I picked our home because of that. We live in a shoebox because I wanted my kids to have great schools. My wife is trying to get us to send our kids to the local catholic school now... I told her if that was the plan we would have bought a bigger house in a worse area. I'm not going to plop down good money just so she can dress up the kids in uniforms.

Hank, that's kind of what we did. We got a lot more house for the money in West Dundee over Schaumburg. The trade off was, we felt that private schools were needed in our new area.

Yeah, I'm not talking about moving to the Brunswick area of Gary or anything but we could get a lot more house in Highland/Griffith/Merrillville.

Agree. I think my trade was pretty fair. I'd much prefer to be in the Mecca, but we aren't changing schools now. Mine will both be in college in a few more years, and then I don't know where we'll be.

I think this sums up most suburban middle class school districts. They aren't as great or as bad as you think. My high school was trash. We wound up having people that OD'd, people that are in jail, people that are doctors and people that teach at Stanford. At the end of the day, a lot of it is about the individual and the support system at home.

It's not as great either. There's a facebook page that illustrates it. I think it's called friends of district 58 in downers grove. Teachers, principals, parents, and the boe are all frustrated with each other.

I am not a fan of all the testing they do or the methods they use to teach. Some students are given a 5 minute lesson and sent into the hall to watch khan academy YouTube videos and figure out the rest. The groups they work in can be helpful and detrimental. There is no curriculum to follow. There are odd gaps in their learning. They are screwing around with grading. This has all happened in the last 3 or so years.

Some kids aren't learning. From what I gather it's a pretty good number and it's all types of kids.

Well Spaulding, "free" education is a monopoly. You get the public school based on your boundaries. They take your tax money regardless of the product output. The school board election is your only recourse.

Luckily our system allows for private education, and in some places charters, that provide an option. The private schools have to provide quality to earn your custom. Amazing how that simple fact makes them responsive to parental concerns.

Testing (and charter schools) are killing our public education system.

A Facebook page? There's a community Brookfield Facebook page that's closed to non residents because if you read it you'd think Brookfield was the shittiest place in the entire universe. That's pretty typical for those kind of pages.

Charters are a response to the inadequate public option. I'd prefer a robust voucher system, but it is better than a public only option for people that cannot afford a private choice.

It gets out of hand sometimes but can be useful. A teacher survey and a group letter from the principals was posted that shows all is not well. It's a quick reference point and resource.

Actually, charters are nothing more than a tool for union busting and the coopting of public education by for profit entities.

We can talk about all these complex solutions all we want, but a nice start for our education system would be to stop buying billion dollar jets and aircraft carriers that the Pentagon doesn't even want and instead put it toward education. I realize that's just throwing money at it and doesn't solve problems, but it certainly helps.

At Badger, we had to walk around big garbage bins in the hallways that collected the rainwater that would leak through the roof we were too poor to patch up. Some kids I went to high school with eventually got busted for running meth labs. One guy has played on Letterman. Me, I write bullshit so people might spend money on stuff. Life's what you make it but you're likely to make more of it when you don't go to the garbage-bins-full-of-rainwater school.

When you have more aircraft carriers than the rest of the world combined... I think you can take a break for a decade or so.

true fact but not sure this is a problem. OPRF is going to build a $45MM pool as soon as they can find 29 people to vote for it.!

think about that. a pool. $45 million dollars.
