This is circling back to my original post. People do segregate themselves. White flight is a real thing. A polite person isn't going to come out and say, "I live in Kenilworth because I don't want to live next to blacks and Jews."

Neil Steinberg is a good example. He doesn't have to live in Northbrook. He could have an equivalent house on Lunt and Hamilton. So why does he live in Northbrook? What is the driving factor? It's not something I would normally ask someone. But Steinberg is always accusing others of bigotry, so I think he should probably examine his own life first.

Conversely, do you think if people in poorer neighborhoods had more money, that they would want to buy a house near Neil Steinberg?

Probably if they were Jewish.

Seriously, it's a complicated thing. Race, class, and money are all factors. If white people didn't flee neighborhoods like Austin the first time a black family moved on the block those wouldn't be "bad neighborhoods". And the days of a garbageman, a doctor, a lawyer, and a factory worker all living on the same block are long gone.

So it's not a racial thing then? Or about bigotry?

It would be foolish for anyone to claim that white flight is not a real thing. Almost as foolish as it is to posit that people only move to Northbrook to avoid people of color.

If you look at my original post I specifically said, "I'm certainly not suggesting that living in such a suburb is evidence of bigotry simply in and of itself."

But I think it would be silly to say that race has nothing to do with it. Steinberg is a typical liberal. It's all about judging people and what he thinks others should do. It's like Clooney wanting a coal miner to lose his job while he is flying around in a private jet with his wife. Or Olivia Wilde living in a mansion on Clinton Hill and advocating to let in refugees who are going to move in next door to me.

So if it's not evidence of bigotry, then how is race involved in the decision and it's not bigotry?

You are absolutely correct. Even your most strident white supremacist would not consider himself to be racist. That interpretation is provided by others typically.

Blacks also choose to voluntarily segregate. If given the choice they'd choose to live "amongst their own" over 90% of the time. I think what they complain about is when they feel that the choice has been made for them. Reading some of the books that I have read pertaining to the segregation period really enlightened me about this very thing.

We lived on Austin. We moved when I was 4 because my dad was mugged 3 times in less than a year. I was with him one of those times.

I don't mean this to be an asshole although it will surely sound like that, but how do you know the challenges that your kids can handle and cannot? When I was in jr high and high school my parents certainly had no idea even though they were very involved. I think you are putting your kids at a disadvantage by now exposing them to every different type of person you can. That's the problem with our country right now in a nutshell. Everybody wants to live in an echo chamber where them and their loved ones will never be challenged to think differently than they otherwise would have.

Because I see the disruption in their learning and their level of frustration or anxiety when they come home. Think of working with somebody you can't stand for years about for about 5 or so hours every week day. Then picture a 8-9 year old trying to manage that. There is behavior that you don't accept from others. It's not a matter of thinking or being different. There is one kid that I'd bet 5 minutes of every hour is spent sorting out, fixing, or discussing some disruption caused by him. He takes people's stuff, throws things, interrupts, generally tries to piss people off. About once every 2 weeks to once a month he either hurts somebody or damages something.
