Poor would be defined as you do not own a car.
Really poor would be defined as you do not own a cellphone.

My issue with giving money directly to people on the street is that I don't know what they're doing with the money and/if they're on drugs. It's pretty clear a lot of the panhandlers are just liars who play on people's desire to express human compassion. There are people with genuinely good hearts that want to help people they perceive as being in need, but sometimes they are essentially enabling them.

Usually if people are homeless they've essentially burned their bridges with all their family members. There are plenty of free opportunities for homeless people, but a lot of the people would rather score some free money than go to Pads or somewhere where something will be required of them.

A lot of the residents of Streeterville, the South Loop, or the southern half of the borough of Manhattan don't have cars. They are not necessarily poor. They just don't see it as a good value as opposed to renting a car one day every few weeks when they need one.

A flip phone and two pairs of shoes would be a starting point for "really poor."

Based on how we've set up his finances, my dad would probably qualify for a LINK card for groceries now that my mom has passed away. I just haven't had the time to investigate it. But he's certainly not poor, much less very poor.

Why would I care what a guy does with money I voluntarily give him? The guy is living on the fucking street. If he wants to buy a bottle of Richard's with the cash I give him, more power to him. Maybe it will make his shitty day a little better.

My millennial son is part of that crowd. He lives in Portland and makes good money. His old used Mercedes (LOL why he bought that I'll never know) needs some expensive repair so he hasn't bothered. Between public transportation, friends, uber, and renting (I thnk there is an app for that too) he says he just doesn't need a car.
