Rashaan Salaam, a Heisman Trophy-winning former running back, has died, a family spokesperson said Tuesday.

He was 42.

Salaam was found dead Monday night in a park in Boulder, Colorado, where he had played for the University of Colorado. Authorities said there was no sign of foul play.

I remember Walter Payton counseling Salaam on the sidelines during Bears games at Soldier Field.

After one of his fumbles, Sweetness was shown with his arm around Rashaan patting his shoulder pads and no doubt offering words of encouragement.

I often wondered if Salaam truly ever realized what a gift that was. We'll never know.
