He did a good job with the Cubs when they were bringing up a lot of young players, so if the Sox are in a true rebuilding of the team, he may very well do a good job. Give him a chance. I'll give him credit for not being afraid of the task and I'll bet the Sox told him a rebuild was going to take place.
