I like both of them as ballplayers, and I even sort of like Adam Eaton as a scrappy little whatever he is, but this is stupid. All this over Adam fucking LaRoche and his kid? Hardly the first problem for either of these guys, but definitely the most severe.

Maybe they should deal them. Combined the two could get a stratospheric return, basically name a player other than Mike Trout* in the game and then some.

Otoh it may be an overreaction and if the Sox have a decent start for once the whole thing will probably be forgotten.

What say you, CSFMB?

*the Nationals would probably do it for Harper because it's baseball's big open secret that he's going to the Yankees as soon as he can.

I was thinking this last year: Sale is the best trade asset the Sox have. He alone could replenish the team's farm system and yield one or two MLB-ready blue chippers with one move.

This team, this organization, is not going to win a championship in the next 3 years, and when Sale's incredibly team-friendly deal runs out, the best they'll get is the first-round pick of a playoff-contending team that signs him. His contract and its terms only serve to increase his value in trade right now.

Also, the team has been playing with house money as far as a devastating shoulder or elbow injury go, so sell high and get some MLB-worthy position prospects and let the lanky fireballer with a powerful slider and herky-jerky mechanics be someone else's problem in the next 5 years.

I'd buy building around Chris Sale if this team demonstrated any ability to build anything but their pitching rotation through the draft, or even the ability to acquire big-time names any sooner than four years after their prime (Melky, LaRoche, Dunn, Pierre, Kotsay, etc.). But they haven't, so trade Sale for a top minor-league system ready to produce this year or next, and build around Quintana, Rodon, and Fulmer.

As soon as I heard Sale's scathing remarks about Kenny, I started wondering if they would start shopping him around. He could bring a nice return to help rebuild the team and generally when a guy lambasts management as he did, he's almost asking to be dealt. I don't imaging there is a lot of interest in Eaton. But Sale would bring plenty of offers. Soler, Baez and Wood?

I was wrong. I didn't think they had the sack to do it, fearful of if it didn't work.

I'll be rooting for Sale and Eaton next year, since I don't have a MLB team to root for. They deserve better than what they got while here and it looks they got it now.

Honestly though, even if they stayed with the WS: what the hell was the team going to accomplish on the field anyway?

Nothing, because of Hahn and Kenny. Hence the "they deserve better than what they got here" comment.

The Sox needed to do a better job complementing the core of cheap controllable guys they had, i.e. Eaton, Sale, Quintana, Rodon, Abreu. The options in this offseason were limited. The problem is they've gone bargain basement when they had the chance to do more. But I'm not sure how much appetite for a large payroll Reinsdorf's investors really have. Since most of them are getting fat with the Bulls, I have to think Jerry could twist some arms if he really wanted to spend more money.

Sox could have competed this year. Changing managers was a huge step in the right direction.

Poor Ricky in this deal. Do you think they told him of the plan to tank when they made him manager?

He will supervise the youth movement and then get replaced again

He deserves better

I don't think Renteria is going to manage shitty players any better or worse than Ventura did.

Ventura was AWFUL in every way. A manager change was probably good for at least 5 wins.

I doubt that. What specifically do you think was AWFUL about Ventura?

Guys, the only good players to be changing teams this offseason have been guy the White Sox traded away. Rich Hill was the big free agent pitcher and Yoenis Cespedes re-signed with the Mets almost immediately. Unless the plan was to trade with themselves the avenues for getting better were pretty much non-existent. The market is so barren for anything other closers any team that wants to get a high quality addition basically has to stop by the White Sox stall and at least see what they're offering. The other options are range from weak to horseshit.

Do you want "33 year old" Edwin Encarnacion for $125 million dollars? Do you want to give up Tim Anderson for Sonny Gray or Chris Archer? Do you want to claw tooth and nail with half the league for Ian Desmond or Dexter Fowler? These were the "going for it" options this offseason.

The way he handled pitchers, his lineups, prepared for games, his in game decisions, the way he looked and his lack of control of his team.
