Dexter Fowler might not sign with the St. Louis Cardinals, perhaps because they are in the same division as the Cubs, and at best can hope for a wild card spot for the foreseeable future, or maybe because their top-to-bottom organizational talent level is "meh". But, someone somewhere thought it might be because Mike Matheny/The Cardinals are racist, because despite MLB having an acknowledged under-representation of black people, The Cardinals don't seem to sign and keep around a lot of black guys.

Anyway, that's all people needed to start whispering and murmuring about Fowler not wanting to sign with the Cards because of what is now insinuated as "institutionalized racism".

I don't believe he's a racist, but he sure as hell ain't warm and fuzzy.

Maybe Dex really enjoyed the Maddon experience?

Money's money, sure, but I suspect it'd be quite the change in atmosphere going from here to there ... or perhaps anywhere really.

I absolutely hate the Cardinals, but I do not at all think they are racist. From everything I read and heard the absolutely loved Heyward and everyone wanted him back. One of their most beloved players ever is Bob Gibson. If Fowler chooses to not sign there I do not think it has anything to do with race.

Seems like much ado about nothing.

The town itself is... to be fair (source: I grew up there and am non-white) racist... maybe not Boston level racist, but it's there.
Ozzie Smith, Willie McGee, Gibson, Brock... are some of the most beloved franchise icons. Basically I think he doesn't want to go there, similar to how Heyward wanted to be elsewhere. It's a non-story story, but whatever generates the clicks and likes; as far as Terry, he's just going through all his classic material before he heads to the big DaManeeeeiiil radio pasture in the sky, is my theory.
