Because his "Ted Phillips isn't making football decisions" mantra that he beat people over the head with for about a year has been absolutely torched by every other team insider willing to speak publicly on the subject.

Greg Gabrial, the Score expert, said on the air that every decision had to be run by Ted.

I think fundamentally they're not really arguing.

Matt keeps saying that Ted is involved. When he is specific, he points to Ted holding the purse strings and not signing guys.

When Dan gets pinned down to what Ted does, he talks about Ted holding the purse strings. So they're not that different.

The thing about the budget is bullshit. They have a salary cap. Every NFL team pretty much spends the same amount of money. There is a floor. But I saw a chart. Bears spend as much as everybody else.

Went back and listened to tranny (after the 2.5 minutes of native ads on the podcast), and the disagreement between Spiegs and Dan was the same: "Phillips is involved in football operations"; "No, he isn't"; "But Pace has to go to Phillips for every signing"; "But Ted doesn't even know who the players are".

Bernstein's position on this has gotten weaker and weaker the more and more people like Hub and Rozner talk to their sources that aren't Ted Phillips. His position now has become "Ted Phillips isn't involved in football operations because Pace only has to go to him for approval if he wants to exceed the budgeted amount Ted sets for football personnel."

That this power construction gives Ted Phillips a de facto say in football operations is delightfully lost on Dan.

recently i saw this very thing come to pass and it amused the hell out of me. basically, right when the packers cut sitton and the bears signed him i saw someone make a post on 4chan's /sp/ board (sports board) saying that they had some access to the packers/lockeroom' through make-a-wish (to "inb4" the expected claims of LARPing) and that sitton had gotten cut after the topic of karpernick's protests / BLM came up and sitton was a wrongthinker; moreover he got into it with ha ha clinton dix, and basically THAT (outside of $$$/football-reasons) was why he was shitcanned when he was... i dutifully "reported" that here in the proper sitton/bears thread at the time...

...so imagine my guffaw when days to a week later i have b&b on and dan talks about a report from [SOME LEGIT REPORTER WITH A VERY "GOOD" SOUNDING NAME] about how there's likely a "racial" element to the sitton thing, and he went on to reiterate that [REPORTER] said [basically everything i said here, which is what i read on /sp/] and then after saying it he backed it up like AND THIS ISN'T JUST 100% CONJECTURE, THIS IS [REPORTER NAME] REPORTING THIS SO YOU KNOW THERE'S SOMETHING TO IT!"

i was downright flabbergasted to see that if some [good upstanding formal reporter] reads and repeats THE SAME EXACT SHIT I READ, you gotta go and take it to the bank cuz he's [REPORTER] and therefore "YOU KNOW THERE'S SOMETHING TO IT!" ---- but if i say it, well, i'm me and i'm a piece of shit and where did i coach my football and etc?

if anything, i think this is more of a "state of modern reporting in the social media age" thing than a "bernstein" thing, but it goes to make my point and thensome that dan will literally champion the same exact fucking bullshit i, or anyone for that matter, read on /sp/ just as long as some formal "reporter" who's employed by a formal "media company" will essentially gatekeeper the information. c'est la fucking vie, no?

btw, i wanna point out there's a chance that the guy who made the original post on /sp/ might have heard some packers beat reporter guy (the one bernstein championed) report that there was a racial element to the sitton thing with kaepernick protests and ha ha clinton dix, and that gave him the werewithol to go LARPing (live action role-playing) on /sp/ ---- but given that it took bernstein something like 3-4 days or a whole week after i read/repeated the "story" to come out with [reporter]'s story, odds are that the reporter ended up coming across the same information i did (either via the same source or an echo chamber) and took it to e-/press, and that's where bernstein picked it up and ran with it because 1) it fit "the narrative" / "right side of history" and 2) it was "vouched for" because it came from a proper old/er-media gatekeeper [reporter]

either way, it just goes to show the power of someone taking to a messageboard [not this one tho =] and saying something.... all you have to do is potentially tickle the fancy of someone who has some "value" to their name/brand and you can end up getting your dis/info out there via a 50kw [big ben gordon with a...] TORCH! of righteousness
