I never got into The Cosby Show, Cheers, or Seinfeld. I saw MANY episodes, but didn't watch them in prime. I was always working nights during their prime. I watched Roseanne reruns at night after work with my girlfriend, now wife.

Was there a show that went through as many critical cast changes but still did not jump the shark than Cheers. It was consistently great and may have even been surpassed by its spinoff.

i'm thinking more 90's and beyond. "All in the Family" is way more "important" as a show, for what it did.

i think "cheers" kind of brought us into the modern age of sitcoms.

"The Honeymooners" is the gold standard. It's literally the definition of what a sitcom is.

"Seinfeld" did so much with the format and managed to turn a TV show into the best social commentary of the modern age, so I can't say anything can top it as far as quality--and it has lasting appeal. "Frasier" *is* a close second. The only weakness to me was when Niles and Daphne got together...that's what killed "The Office" too. Tension is what makes good comedy.

The first several seasons of Frasier were terrific, but IMHO they soon had too many episodes based on "wacky misunderstandings" and once Daphne's family was introduced it went straight into the toilet for me.

My all-time favorite is the original WKRP in Cincinnati. What would have happened if it had a longer run, I don't know, as many shows peter out after four seasons or so (which is understandable), but the few seasons it did have were just about perfect.

Bernstein has said he didn't like watching The Honeymooners because the threat of domestic violence made him uncomfortable. He has no trouble telling people that he enjoys watching football players destroy their brains for his amusement, though. :roll:

I think you could make a strong case for any of those being the best. I agree with W_Z's overall premise on The Honeymooners, but IMO it was not around long enough to be considered Top 5 or 10.

The Office could have been up there if it ended in 2009, but it limped on for years, being crowded and unfunny and bad. All that stuff people say about Parks and Recreation being great because it's funny and heartwarming was actually true of the 2nd/3rd/4th seasons of The Office, with the addition of absolutely crushing despair.

My wife and I are going through Seinfeld on Hulu right now and we haven't hit the JTS moment.

Larry Sanders is another favorite of mine. An underrated show would be King of the Hill.

Shows that just miss, Parks & Rec b/c the show didn't get good until after the first couple of seasons. Modern Family lost it after Gloria got pregnant.

You can tell that this board is mostly men, no one brought up my all time least favorite sitcom, friends.

It was a little before my time. But I caught the syndication reruns when I was a kid.

But Seinfield is number one.

Seinfeld, Cheers, and Roseanne are my faves.
I love Curb, not sure I'd describe it as a traditional sitcom.
Everybody Loves Raymond had it's moments, but as a rule, I stay the hell away from CBS sitcoms in general.

and idk if this counts as a "sitcom", probably not, but i always thought Lookwell! had all kinds of potential (i mean, look what family guy was able to do with adam west as a parody of himself. where do you think they got the idea from? =)

incidentally, i like to think i have a solid gold idea for a sitcom (one of the lowest forms of communication known to man) that could probably kill on adult swim (especially if i only had to do 11mins at a time) --- i mean my situation = comedy. and it literally goes existential and it takes a step back and mocks the very concept of sitcoms by ramping up the situation to such an extreme that there's actual comedy (see why i put "heil honey i'm home!" up there? =) --- so yeah if anyone ever wants to gun for a pilot and get a show on tv hit me up. seriously =D

it's definitely not the best but i loved watching "That 70's Show". the last season was horrendous and the guy they brought in to replace eric was total shit. but the show is good for lazy laughs. it's on IFC all the time now but they rerun a lot of the same episodes.
